Munchkin Christmas LiteWith the holiday season just beginning in earnest this weekend, it’s time to start thinking about that one important question that everyone raises during the season:  can you play Munchkin?  Okay, maybe not the most important question, but still valid.  Well, Steve Jackson games has made it easier than ever to get into Munchkin with Munchkin Christmas Lite.  An inexpensive deck of Christmas themed cards, Christmas Lite has all of the Munchkin Kittensmaterials for three or four players to learn the basics of Munchkin.

Bottlecap VikingsBottlecap Vikings may seem like a cross between Fallout and the popular television show (which would be pretty great), but, instead, it is a fun, family friendly resource management game.  In Bottlecap Vikings you will sail, loot, and plunder your way around a bottlecap shaped game board.  Build your village and gain glory until the Valkyries come to claim the fallen across a variable action rondel, two victory conditions, and individual player ability trees.Melee

Styled after 16-byte video games of yore and a pinch of Minecraft, Melee is an army battle game for two to four players.  In the world of Melee, the king has died without an heirs to the throne.  Each player will control one of four different armies (each sitting astride either a parrot, mouse, pig, or dinosaur), fighting from their own castle, to attain the throne.  You will use money and other Operation Faustresources to build your armies and pit them against each other to decide ultimate dominance.

Think Coup or Bang! during WWII and you’ve got Operation F.A.U.S.T., a new deception game from Grey Fox Games.  In this highly social game, players will find themselves in occupied France during WWII, tasked with a mission to recover Europe’s most valuable pieces of art before they are looted by Hitler.  To win the game you must gather intelligence, locate Europe’s most at risk treasures, and recover them before your opponents.  Use your network of spies, double agents, and more to achieve your goals, but take care not to reveal information to others.Bomb Squad

Remaining on the field of battle, but updating it to a modern era, Bomb Squad is a cooperative game with high stakes.  In Bomb Squad players control members of the Retro City Bomb Squad, and their trusty bomb disposal robots in order to defeat dastardly villains that threaten the world.  Help program a robot to navigate buildings, rescue hostages, and defuse bombs in real time.  You cannot see your hand of Command cards, so you’ll have to help your partners figure out which cards to play.  Using a special timer app, the game plays out in real time, with bombs going off every ten minutes unless you defuse them!

TerraCombining a party game experience with factual trivia, Terra pits players against each other in a competition where being close counts.  Faced with world trivia questions like “How long is the Golden Gate Bridge?” or “How many sculptures are on Easter Island?” players will attempt to make educated guesses, marking them with cubes on a slider.  If you don’t know the answer, use your opponents knowledge against them by guessing just a little bit less or more than what they do.  It can’t hurt, as being closer is the goal.

Aperture Science welcomes players to a board-based cake acquisition enrichment activity, Portal the board game.  Yes, Cryptozoic and Valve have adapted the popular Portal video game series into a board gaming experience.  Players control test subjects who are attempting Portal board gameto traverse the testing lab, represented by a modular board, using high tech portal guns.  Tiles will fall off the board over the course of the game, causing players to leap forward as fast as they can in hopes of not getting caught in a disappearing tile.  And at the end:  cake!  Of course, the cake is a lie, so Cryptozoic has given you an exclusive Steam redemption Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Gamecode for Portal 2 instead.

Fantasy Flight does what the company is best at by remaking and relaunching the classic Warhammer Quest the Adventure Card Game.  This card game is a cooperative game of heroic dungeon adventures for one to four players.  Players assume the roles of some of the Old World’s most iconic heroes, then venture into the shadows to battle goblins, trolls, orcs, ghouls, ratmen, and other creatures.  Can you survive their relentless onslaught?  There are only two ways for your quest to end – in death or in glory!

And if you’re going to be picking up a new playmat, might as well grab a fancy Monster Playmat Tube.  These tubes come in a variety of colors, including red, green, gray, clear, and opaque black and white.  Unlike other brands of playmat tubes, Monsters are triangular, which keeps them from rolling away Dragon Farklewhen you sit them down.

You’ve played Farkle, but have you ever braved the challenge of Dragon Farkle?  The answer is likely “no,” as the game is just coming out this weekend.  Dragon Farkle is like standard versions of Farkle, but with the added mechanics that account for the whole dragon-ness of it all.  Not only will you roll dice to “build your armies,” you will also utilize various magic items and companions, represented by cards, to battle against the menacing dragon.  Shadows Over Normandie Achtung Cthulhu

What game isn’t improved by throwing some Cthulhu into it?  None.  The answer is none.  In Shadows Over Normandie:  Achtung! Cthulhu, two to three players control opposing armies (the Majestic, Deep Ones, or Black Sun) in all out warfare.  Represented by illustrated tokens, each army moves across battlefield tiles that pose obstacles and cover, much like a miniature battle game.  Of course, in this version of Amazing Spider-Man Dice Masters Starter SetWWII, the Elder Gods have fully descended upon the Earth, adding a little extra challenge.

The Walking Dead has pervaded nearly ever aspect of culture since it first showed up on AMC, and so it’s about dang time it received that final test of pop culture-dom:  a Risk game.  If you haven’t played Risk you’re obviously an alien, so it’s pretty easy to imagine how this version is an appropriation of Walking Dead‘s characters and locations by the regional warfare of Risk.

One of the best family games ever created, Carcassonne, receives two new additions this weekend.  First up, another version of the base game, set, however, during a harsh winter instead of the lush spring.  This Carcassonne Winter Edition also includes the Gingerbread expansion.  Along with this is another collection of previously released expansions, including the Count, King, and Robber.

Dec 152012

Before we get into the pimping of cool merchandise, everyone at Pulp just wants to give a special thank you to everybody who came out last Wednesday and made Dennis Hopless’ signing a HUGE, HUGE success.  We’re all very proud of Dennis and watching him rise to prominence as a Marvel writer, so it’s nice to see so many of our customers are ready to support him.

Now with the mushy stuff out of the way, let’s talk about another kind of mushy stuff.  I mean seriously, was anyone not shocked speechless after Avengers Arena #1?!!  Well, luckily, you don’t have to wait that long to see which hero bites the dust next and what the fallout will be regarding the first major death of the series, because issue #2 drops this Wednesday.  That’s right, only a week after issue #1, you get to have another helping of violent, grisly teen drama served to you on a platter.

And, not surprise here, Cable & X-Force #2 also ships this Wednesday, providing answers for the Phalanx infection that seems to be encroaching on the pleasant beach at the end issue #1.  Plus more firing of absurdly giant guns.

Comic readers have spoken and Marvel has listened.  Because of the outcry for more female creators and characters in comics, Marvel has begun to publish a number of series either written or drawn by women, as well as many featuring the superheroines of the universe.  First among them is the most recent ongoing Captain Marvel series.  Written by the quirky Kelly Sue DeConnick, Captain Marvel brings Carol Danvers back to prominence by bringing her name and costume out of the dark ages of comic sexism and into the modern era.  The first issue of the collection will bring any new reader up-to-date while the second storyline sends Carol back in time to team-up with one of her airwomen idols of World War II.  Certainly a great gift for a daughter or niece looking to get into comics.

Remember, the D is silent.

Read the story before seeing the film with the first issue of Django Unchained.  Usually film-to-comic adaptations are weak sauce, but a there’s a couple special aspects of this series that set it apart from the others.  Foremost, R.M. Gueara, the artist of Jason Aaron’s gritty, legendary crime epic Scalped, lends his chalky, scratchy pencils to Tarantino’s vision, grounding the book in a moody atmosphere.  Also, given that Gueara did little other work while working on Scalped, Django Unchained offers another rare chance to see his skill at work.  Along with the artwork, the book’s plot and dialog is lifted directly from Tarantino’s screenplay, including scenes that didn’t make it to the theatrical cut of the movie.

With the cold weather encroaching this winter, there’s only one acceptable way of warming yourself up:  wrapping a schizophrenic, murdering superhero around your shivering body.  And if that’s your plan, there’s only one of those around, and that’s Deadpool, baby!  So, grab yourself a merry little Deadpool Hoodie this season, whether it’s in medium, large, extra large, or double XL.

No one will question why you’re talking to yourself in public ever again.

Nov 022012

For those that know their Shakespeare, Merchant of Venus might sound slightly familiar. Same for anyone who knows their board game history, because Merchant of Venus is a reboot of the classic Avalon Hill board game. This second edition of Merchant of Venus contains a new re imagined game design as well as Richard Hamblen’s classic design.

In Merchant of Venus, one to four players take roles of intergalactic merchants competing to trade goods with alien cultures. Will pirates, space junk, or sabotage end your business? Or can wheel and deal your way to financial superiority.

Time to get all shirtless up in this Enterprise!

The captain’s log needed a little Shatner-ing up, so Bandai decided to publish an original series Star Trek Deck Building Game to go along with their Next Generation games. This new base game can be combined and played with the previous two Next Gen releases or simply as a stand alone game. Either way, players begin as a captain of a starship, controlling a standard crew and basic weaponry. From there, however, you choose to improve various aspects of your ship and crew, attempting to complete the mission directives of two diverse scenarios. If you want to go boldly where no other deck builder has gone before, go on a Star Trek.
