Huck #1Huck #1

-Some think he’s a blowhard, some think he’s a genius, either way it can not be denied that Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsmen, Jupiter’s Legacy, The Ultimates, Civil War) makes interesting comics!

-Millar is the master of subverting the formulas and tropes of comics, which is exactly what he’s back to do here.

-In line with the lighter tone Millar showcased in Chrononauts, Huck is about a smalltown resident with superhuman powers.  Instead of saving the world, Huck simply helps out his neighbors.  Or, at least, he does until the media gets wind of him.

-Millar’s story is brought to life by the exquisite painterly artwork of Rafael Albuquerque (Ei8ht, American Vampire, Animal Man).

Batman Europa #1 (of 4)Batman Europa

-Superstar comic artist, Jim Lee (Justice League, Batman, Superman Unchained), returns to the Dark Knight!

-A long gestating miniseries, Batman Europa features the combined talents of American writer Brian Azzarello and Italian writer Matteo Casali.

-Each of issue will feature a different artist, again crossing the pond by alternating between American and Italian talents.

-If that abundance of talent hasn’t hooked you yet, the premise will.  Batman, infected by a deadly virus, must team up with the Joker and travel to Europe to find the cure.

Ms Marvel #1All New All Different Marvel Part 1

-Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman return to The Mighty Thor, continuing to follow the story of Jane Foster as Thor!

-Also returning this week is Sam Humphries Star Lord series.  Wait, who?  Star Lord, man!

-If you haven’t been reading Ms. Marvel, one of Marvel‘s best ongoing series, then this new #1 is your chance to jump on!

-After outing her superhero identity to her mother and almost kissed her best friend, Kamala now also has to deal with being a full-time Avenger!

All New All Different Marvel Part 2Spider-Woman #1

-How do you stop evil when the weapon you use is dangerously addictive?  That’s the question that plagues the Black Knight.

-Many customers have been excited for the new Black Knight series, largely because he will be traveling to the Weirdworld Jason Aaron introduced in Secret Wars.

-Pulp’s own, Dennis Hopeless, relaunches his hit Spider-Woman series this week, but with one major difference.

-Reuniting with artist Javier Rodriguez, Hopeless is writing a considerably pregnant Spider-Woman.  Jessica is also not taking any guff from those who think she should take it easy.

The GoddamnedThe Goddamned #1

-Personally vouched for by Dennis Hopeless as the best script he’s ever read from Jason Aaron.

-Local creator Jason Aaron (Thor, Dr. Strange, Star Wars, Southern Bastards) reteams with R.M. Guera, his artist from Scalped!

-Set nearly 2000 years after the Garden of Eden, The Goddamned takes place on a wild, chaotic, barbaric Earth.  Prior to the flood, humanity is vicious and violent.

-Pitched as Conan meets the Bible.

Limbo #1 (of 6)Limbo

-Take a chance on two creators new to Image Comics!

-Drenched in eighties nostalgia and neon!

-Essentially a detective narrative, Limbo is set in a fictional city that is suffocating the lead character (a P.I. with no memory or name) as he attempts to locate the femme fatale.

-Supernatural elements, like voodoo, collide with crime fiction.

All New All Different AvengersAll New All Different Marvel November Part 1

-There’s so many books coming out from Marvel this week, we had to break them up into two sections!

-Mark Waid’s flagship Avengers series, All New All Different Avengers finally begins!  A completely new team of young heroes, including Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Thor, are unleashed against the Marvel Universe‘s problems.

-All New Hawkeye may have the same creative team, but its cast receives a major shake-up!  Old Clint Barton from the Old Man Logan world teams up with a mature Kate Bishop to right wrongs.

-Speaking of shake-ups, Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us, Earth 2, Superior Iron Man) introduces X-23 as Wolverine in All New Wolverine!

All New All Different Marvel November Part 2The Ultimates

-A cult favorite character, madman Cletus Kasady hungers for his blood in the ongoing Carnage series!

-The bad guys are in charge in Al Ewing’s (Loki:  Agent of Asgard, Mighty Avengers, New Avengers) new Illuminati series, starring The Hood, Black Ant (the evil Ant-Man), Enchantress, and other villains scrapping for survival.

-Al Ewing is also launching another Avengers-esque team, The Ultimates.  An eclectic cast, The Ultimates includes Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Galactus (yup, you read that right), and others.

-Finally, Web Warriors is another new Spider-Man family book, featuring Spider-Men from various earths, including everyone’s favorite web slinging lady, Spider-Gwen!

ThorsSecret Wars Battlworld Week 4

-After a three week deluge of new Secret Wars tie-ins, Marvel lets up slightly for the fourth week.

-Essentially the Marvel Universe‘s anti-Justice League, the Squadron Sinister (previously Supreme) are blazing a trail across Battleworld, participating in fisticuffs with every team they cross paths with.

-Every Battleworld needs a school and the new Runaways miniseries is all about class!  Written by Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes), Runaways brings back some of the original team alongside new characters like a young Winter Soldier, Cloak and Dagger, and Valeria Richards.

-Taking the place of the stellar Thor series, Thors focuses on the Battleworld police force as they solve mysteries and break cases (cue the CSI:  Miami screech).  Oh, and Marvel writer extraordinaire, Jason Aaron, returns to helm this series! Plants vs Zombies Bully for You

Plants vs. Zombies: Bully for You #1

-Start planting those sunflowers, because the zombies are breaking through the hedges!

-Crazy Dave and his two young wards investigate the history of Dr. Zomboss.

-Each issue also includes two bonus stories by different creators, including Dustin Nguyen on issue one.

-A perfect young readers entry point!

Gotham Academy v.1 tpbGotham Academy v.1 tpb

-Among DC‘s strongest new series, Gotham Academy is finally out in trade!

-Essentially Harry Potter in Gotham City, Gotham Academy stars a group of original characters navigating the haunted and mysterious hallways of the city’s most prestigious private school.

-Gorgeous, vibrant artwork from Karl Kerschel stands out among other drab, “house style” DC comics.

-There is currently no better series for tween or teen comic readers at DC!  This is a must read for anyone in that age range!

DC June Relaunch Week 3Justice League of America #1

-After three weeks, the flagship title of DC‘s June Relaunch is here!  Justice League of America, both written and illustrated by Bryan Hitch (America’s Got Powers, The Ultimates, The Authority), reunites the seven major DC heroes to battle evil!

-Fans of the current Batgirl run will want to pick up Black Canary #1 from the same creative team!

-A new hero takes over the golden helmeted mantle of Dr. Fate while Scott Lobdell re-imagines Doomsday as a Hulk-like teenager with a Jekyll and Hyde problem in Doomed.

-Rounding out this week are Harley Quinn and Power Girl (by the same creative team as the solo series), Robin Son of Batman (starring Damien Wayne), Martian Manhunter, and Prez (about the first teenage president elected by Twitter).

Iron Patriot #1

-The industry’s weirdest, hallucinogenic writer, Ales Kot, takes over an ongoing series starring former War Machine, James Rhodes.

-If you picked up a copy of Secret Avengers #1 a couple weeks ago, you know Kot delivers on the kinetic action beats, quirky comedy, and unusual situations.

-Rhodes is forced to go up against a new villain that is threatening his family.

-Oh, and eventually James Rhodes dies. . .or, at least, that’s what the solicits say.

Real Heroes #1

-Bryan Hitch, artist of The Ultimates and America’s Got Powers, returns to Image for another genre deconstructing series!

-Hitch’s ultra-realistic style is put to the test with a superhero book set in the real world!

-A real world superhero unlike any other, Real Heroes stars the world’s highest-paid actors, all of which have just starred in the blockbuster superhero film The Olympians.

-Fiction and fact blur together as these celebrities are launched into the fantasy world of their film and forced to survive against an alien army.

Silver Surfer #1

-Dan Slott, mastermind behind The Superior Spider-Man, takes his skills to the stars in this cosmic Marvel title!

-Galactus‘ former Herald roams the universe, showing off all corners of the cosmos to his young female companion.

-Mike Allred (FF, X-Statix, iZombie) enhances the zany tone of this space adventure with his retro-esque pencils and colors!

-Fans of Doctor Who should give issue one a try, as Slott has openly stated that he’s copying the episodic nature and companion-based adventure of the famous television series.

All New Ghost Rider #1

-Robbie Reyes is the All New Ghost Rider!

-A street racing teen from the wrong side of the tracks, Robbie inherents the powers of the infamous Spirit of Vengeance!

-Tradd Moore, artist for the violent Image hit The Strange Talent of Luther Strode,

-Dennis Hopeless, local author, former Pulp Fiction employee, and current writer of Avengers Undercover, endorsed this very issue as a great read that last Wednesday!

Oct 132012

Point one is usually considered an unimportant amount. But not this coming Wednesday.

Marvel NOW! Point One is extremely important for those who’ve got an interest in the forthcoming Marvel NOW! refresh! This over-sized issue will contain original short stories previewing and leading into future Marvel NOW! titles, including FF, Young Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and Cable & X-Force. That means stories by the likes of Kieron Gillen, Matt Fraction, Mike Allred, and Dennis Hopeless.

Wait, did I say Dennis Hopeless? Yes, former Pulp Fiction employee (like you didn’t already know), Dennis Hopeless. Dennis’ story is absolutely key to understanding his future Cable & X-Force series. It will show how Cable brought the, currently insane, Forge onto the team. Check the issue out for a great preview of upcoming titles. And don’t forget the Scottie Young baby variant!

Speaking of Scottie Young and babies (which seem to be utterly linked these days), A-Babies vs. X-Babies also drops this Wednesday. If you were one of the many who wished Cyclops and Captain America would stop acting like babies during Avengers vs. X-Men, this…is probably not the issue for you. However, if you love cute Marvel parody books lampooning the ridiculousness of giant crossover events, this IS the book for you. And you don’t even have to worry about a baby variant because the whole book is full’a babies!

Nathan Edmondson is one of those up-and-coming young comic writers you always hear about. He’s written great espionage series like Who is Jake Ellis?, Dancer, and Grifter, but now he’s turning his talents to Ultimate Comics Iron Man. This four issue miniseries will delve deep into the history of the Ultimate Universe’s version of the iron avenger, revealing his secrets for donning the armor in the first place. Oh, and did someone say Ultimate Mandarin? Followers of The Ultimates should give this miniseries more than a cursory glance.

It’s a known fact that everyone who reads the engrossing Morning Glories series has said, at one time or another, “I’d love to see this cover artist do interiors!” Well, that has finally happened. Mind the Gap is written by Jim McCann and, more importantly, drawn by Rodin Esquejo, the phenomenal cover artist for Morning Glories. Enough about Morning Glories, though, because Mind the Gap more than stands on its own. Not quite a murder mystery, this coma mystery centers around a sketchy cast of characters, all of which have their own motives for placing the lead character into a coma. But don’t count her out just because she’s unconscious, from her own mindscape she attempts to piece her memories together to catch the culprit. Just like Saga, Prophet, and, yes, Morning Glories before it, this first volume of Mind the Gap (the first six issues) is only $9.99! You can’t beat it!
