Formerly exclusive to a certain big box store that shall not be named, Star Trek Catan has hit warp ten and materialized on the Pulp Fiction shelves!  This version plays like the extremely popular base game excepted for an added mechanic called Support Cards and an entire thematic redesign to accommodate the source material.   The source cards are distributed at the beginning of the game, and add extra benefits to each action.

Another twist in the bend that is railroading board games, Trains and Stations is a massive resource management game from WizKids.  This family friendly railroader has players acting as railroad barons, laying track, constructing buildings, and organizing many other aspects of the business, as they compete (and occasionally work with) other players.

Attention, space cadets!

A classic Sci-Fi double shot is coming your way in the form of the Rocket Age RPG and Space Cadets:  Dice Duel.

Rocket Age from Cubicle 7 operates off of the same Vortex system as their hit Doctor Who and Primeval RPGs, but cobbling together references and settings reminiscent of all the great sixties space adventure films, comics, and television series.

Space Cadets: Dice Duel takes the original Space Cadets board game and turns it into a team based dice rolling game.  Each team of players (up to four a team) control different members of a starship crew, with each rolling dice fast and furious to see if they earn their pay during a ship-to-ship battle.

Mage Knight receives the Heroclix stand-alone treatment with Mage Knight Resurrection.  As with the Star Trek, The Hobbit, and The Dark Knight before it, Mage Knight Resurrection is a complete miniatures adventure battle game in box.  Out as well is a matching blind box expansion tower of miniatures to add to the game.

A new party game from Looney Labs, makers of Fluxx and Chrononauts, Choose One, has players making bets on how much they know their friends.  Each turn consists of a question, such as aisle or window, and players must decide how they think their opponents will answer.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the new hotness, has players taking on the roles of men and women, with the male characters controlling the stock market and the female characters making dresses.  Each side must roleplay their respected character in efforts of accruing extra points all leading up to a looks contest at a culminating dance.  And that’s why it’s extremely popular.

And finally, the lightning round!

-From Chaosium, World War Cthulhu:  The Darkhest Hour RPG supplement for Call of Cthulhu.

-Night Eternal, the competitive True Blood card game from Cryptozoic, makers of both Walking Dead board games.

It’s not quite to midnight yet (as I start writing this), but I’m calling it in favor of us all outlasting the Mayan apocalypse.  If you didn’t get enough of the end-of-the-world conspiracy theory, then Tzolk’in:  The Mayan Calendar is here to supply you with more.  The oft talked about Mayan calendar plays into the mechanics of the game, as players carefully place their Mayan Meeples onto interlocking gears which rotate around the board, moving the pieces to different action zones.  To accomplish placement and conduct other key actions, players must spend corn, ultimately attempting to please the gods or constructing underground temples.  So, until the next apocalypse myth comes along, make mine Tzolk’in.

Is the force strong with you?

Or have you given into the dark side?

Either way, you’ve got a side to play in the new two-player Star Wars LCG card game from Fantasy Flight.  Set-up like many of their other popular LCGs (but with more X-Wings and stuff), Star Wars has players choosing sides in a head-to-head battle for galactic domination.  Players then balance objective decks (containing mission cards) and player decks (containing character and equipment cards) in order to complete their assigned tasks.  As with Magic the Gathering or most other CCG-style games, players place/play their cards into the center of the table in order to activate them.  Of course, the real question of the game will be, who shot first?

I’m going bet that many who read this have fantasized about manning a starship at one time in their life.  Be careful what you wish for, however.  Space Cadets fulfills that wish by assigning each player an important role on the bridge of a freshly minted starship.  This cooperative game for three to six players enlists a captain, helmsman, engineer, and weapons, shield, and sensor officers.  Each member of the crew has a specific  task to complete in order for the entire team to win, so make sure you staff your bridge wisely, or else it’ll be your final frontier.

Bad guys need friends, too.  Eclipse:  Rise of the Ancients is the first expansion for the epic space battle game, Eclipse, introduces tons of ancient adversaries which can assist all the baddies from the original game.  Along with these foes, the expansion also includes original rare technologies, developments, alliances, ancient homeworlds, and warp portals.  Three brand new player boards also offer four new alien races to choose from.  And with the game’s modular design, all or some of these additions can mixed in with the contents of the base game, completely at your discretion.

Que the title card:

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

And you can fill in the rest. Fantasy Flight‘s Star Wars Edge of the Empire beta edition is the first release of their revitalized Star Wars RPG line. This first volume introduces players to the new system, one which is uniquely designed, sticking with bounty hunter, smuggler characters. Further releases will flesh out the universe as well as introduce a unique dice set. But don’t think the beta edition has left you out in the cold without bantha entrails, it provides a sheet of stickers which allow you to label your own dice with the markings specialized for this system.

If lightsabers and Millenium Falcon’s aren’t your speed (which is, like, nobody), then maybe the new Marvel Heroic Roleplaying Civil War Event Book will suit you. This hardcover must be played with the base MHR book or the premium event book (which we also have), but when combined four to six players can play through the events of Marvel’s Civil War event. That means you can stop Nitro from blowing up Stamford. Or punch Iron Man in the face as Captain America. Basically, you can be whoever you want as you work through the key events of the storyline and it’s tie-in series. Pick a side and get ta fighting.

Here’s your mission: a Union reconnaissance plane has crashed, you must venture to the crash site an uncover what it was searching for, which lays beneath it. Or so says the operation mandate of Tannhauser: Operation Hinansho. This map supplement comes with two campaigns and nine scenarios along with all the tokens, maps, and rules for running them as well as a new set of tactics for all factions involved.

Samurai Battles brings the tactical strategy of feudal Japanese warfare alive with two play options. The Command and Colors version uses Special Dragon cards and tokens to create the feel of a real battle. The Art of Tactic version of the game has players choosing their movements in secret to recreate the actuality of warfare. Not only are the mechanics easy to learn and easier to play, but the game comes with over a hundred fully detailed samurai miniatures and movement bases for each soldier type.

If it ain’t broke, reprint it.

Or, at least, that seems to be Wizards of the Coast’s motto. Two weeks ago, all three of the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons books were reprinted in beautiful remastered hardcover packaging. The DM’s Guide, Player’s Handbook, and Monster Manual are untouched rules-wise while also reprinting all the original artwork. Plus, each purchase puts part of the funds toward furthering the Gygax Memorial Fund.

Crossing the street for a visit to Paizo, the new Pathfinder Player Character Folio. Coming with sixteen pages that will help you to organize and track your character’s progression and abilities. Broken into boxes and sections for listing feats, class features, familiars, cohorts, and items, as well as quick reference charts and folder flaps, this folio is all you’ll ever need to stay on top of all your character’s developments.

Chasing dragons is usually not advised as they are regularly unfriendly when caught, however the new Game of Thrones LCG Chapter Pack of the same name actually advises it. As with the other Chapter Packs, the Chasing Dragons pack comes with 60 new cards for the Beyond the Narrow Sea cycle. If you haven’t played any of the LCG games before, each chapter pack is designed to advance the story and alter the gameplay, so, in short, keep the game fresh and interesting.

Agricola is easily one of the best resource management games ever created, but it is a long game and it is intented for multiple players. But don’t worry, Z-Man is on top of it. The new Agricola two player game has parred the playstyle down, adapting Agricola for a quick head-to-head, stand-alone experience. Players compete by working to fence in the most animals over the period of eight turns.

It is, in fact, not a small world after all.

Days of Wonder releases a new addition to their popular Risk-style board (featured on Will Wheaton’s Tabletop) this week, Small World Realms. This edition to the game is a collection of map pieces, tokens, and original rules scenarios, allowing players to create their own board for use by races and powers from either the original Small World or Small World Underground. So, maybe the real answer to whether it’s a small world after all is: it’s up to you.

Two millennia after the dawn of space travel, the galaxy hums with prosperity and peace. But as mankind and its neighbors colonized the stars, the burgeoning need for resources becomes apparent. The cargo you haul could be worth fortune, so grab your helmet and suit up! So are the stakes in Starship Merchants!

You can’t teach an old war new tricks. But you can update them.

Axis & Allies releases two updated and altered versions of its classic wargame structure today with Axis & Allies 1942 Second Edition and Axis & Allies 1941. The 1942 edition is an updated, heftier version of the previous edition, complete with new units. 1941, however, is an entirely new Axis & Allies release featuring the same popular mechanics in a different theater of war.
