Morels gets you high.  High on board games!

I’m aware how corny that intro was, but this game is, in actuality, about mushrooms, not corn.  Morels is one of the rare entries into the two-player game category, so it’s double the awesome for also being a great game.  Each player controls two decks of cards, a night and day deck.  Each of these contain various types of shrooms to be grown or eaten during these distinct periods of the day.  The types of mushrooms cooked, and what they are cooked with, earns players different points toward a victory goal.

The Serpents and the Wolf is the first expansion for the board game adaptation of the popular Starz television series, Spartacus.  Within this expansion set are two completely new houses, Varinius and Seppius, as well as hordes of new armors, combatants, and weapons.  In the bloody arenas of Rome, players pit two teams of gladiators against each other in violent combat, until only one team remains standing.

To make sure you don’t have to find out why they smell worse on the inside, you’re going to want to pick up the fourth Force Pack expansion for Fantasy Flight‘s Star Wars LCG card game.  Six original objective sets are included within the pack, focusing the action on Walkers, troops, shields, and careful management of how damage is dealt.  Join the Assault on Echo Base by picking up this newest expansion pack.

Discerning DMs pay heed to Pathfinder‘s NPC Codex Box.

Like the previous token boxes Piazo has released, this one contains over 300 tokens and stands of varying sizes.  Each token is represented in full color art pulled directly from the NPC Codex.  Make sure your game is engrossing and clear by picking up these essential pawns.

It’s all about the bad guys in the Enemies of the Imperium!

The most recent supplemental hardcover for Only War, Enemies of the Imperium details hundreds of NPC beings that stand in the way of the Imperial Guard, along with their methods of combat so that the GM can employ them correctly in battle.  Squad-level combat is also detailed in the book, giving the option for giant formation fights.

Say what you will about Arrow on The CW, that it’s Gossip Arrow or Smallville-lite, but the show’s improved as it has continued, often by subverting expectations (He’s arrested by episode four?!).  Now, bridging off the television show is the new Arrow #1 by Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg, the creators and head writers of the show, and classic Green Arrow artist Mike Grell.  Before Jeff Lemire revitalizes the current Green Arrow series with issue #17, Arrow #1 can be your go to book for classic fat-cat bashing and Robin Hood-daring Green Arrow adventure.  Plus, the acting’ll be better in your head than it is on the show.

And if we’re talking about classic pulpy comic adventure there is no book that’s ever existed that sums the idea up better than Dynamite‘s Masks miniseries.  Starring a combination of the greatest pulp heroes to be created, that being The Shadow, The Spider, Zorro, The Green Hornet, and Kato, Masks pits this cadre of avengers versus a fascist police state, recently instituted by a corrupt criminal government.  And if that list of pulp heroes isn’t enough, over the course of the series many more characters will join in the fray.  Considering how the epic level of epicness that this series entails, Dynamite had to get an A-list artist to draw the thing.  How about Alex Ross.  Yup, the entirety of issue #1′s interiors are drawn by the legendary artist of Kingdom Come, Marvels, Justice, and about a million iconic covers, Alex Ross, who it also should be noted hasn’t drawn interiors for a comic in about four years.  And if that wasn’t enough, Jae Lee, Francesco Francavilla, and Alex Ross all lend their talents to the book’s various covers.

Get a brohoof ready, because IDW is dropping the sparkly magic this next Wednesday.  That’s right, the cultural phenomenon that is the redux of My Little Pony has now spread to the world of comics.  I know most of you will frown and complain, but, somewhere secretly inside you all is a Bronie waiting to get out.  Well, maybe that’s an overstatement, but they are out there and they are excited about this series.  Featuring four cover variants, one of which is drawn by Jill Thompson, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is written by popular female comic writer, Katie Cook and features all your favorite ponies.  So, overcome you bias and buy one of Twilight Sparkle.

The Fantastic Four has left the planet to whisk their children around the universe on a field trip of different cultures and races, but no worries, they’ll only be gone, to our perspective, for four minutes.  Sounds fine, right?  Did I mention who they’ve left to guard the keys to the castle?  Yeah, just Ant-Man, Medusa, She-Hulk, and a pink-haired celebutant in a Thing suit.  Okay, it may go badly.  With Matt Fraction writing a classic Marvel tale in the main Fantastic Four series, his crazy, post-modern sensibilities have to have somewhere to go and that is FF #1.  Joined by popular alt-artist Mike Allred (Madman, X-Force, Daredevil), this Marvel NOW! series is going to bring the unusual in a very, very good way.

I just want to quote the Image Comics description for the first book we’ll talk about tonight as a way of helping you understand what it’s like.

“Sexica and her Werewolf boyfriend Nikoli travel across a sci-fi, fantasy Russia smoking singing cigarettes.  Meanwhile the organ hunter Nura is sent out with a severed head and instructions to find its body.”

Yup.  That’s Brandon Graham for you, folks.  If you’ve read Prophet (the craziest, most brilliant comic out there!) or King City (the only comic with a cat telescope), then you’re well aware of Graham’s ingenious perspective on, well, everything.  Graham’s comics build fully realized, utterly unique worlds for you to explore visually (as he does the art himself) and conceptually.  For those reasons, I can promise you Multiple Warheads: Alphabet to Infinity will be one of the most interesting books you’ll ever read.

Jason Starr, renowned crime novelist and comic author, takes a crack at Wolverine‘s past this Wednesday, but not in a way you’ve ever seen before.  Wolverine MAX is a five issue miniseries that takes Logan back to Japan for an origin story of violent proportions.  If you’ve never read any of Marvel’s MAX line of books, they’re a no holds barred, adult version of famous Marvel characters.  So, in short, Wolverine like you’ve never seen him before.  Expect blood.  Expect guts.  Expect cursing.  Expect SNIKT-ing!

And if we’re talking blood and guts, we might as well mention the new Punisher War Zone miniseries hitting shelves this Wednesday.  Picking up where Greg Rucka’s recent Punisher ongoing series (both volumes, of which, are available now) left off at, Frank is on the run from the law in a way he’s never been before after taking the fall for shooting a cop.  Even though he didn’t do the deed, Frank is taking the blame to protect the woman who did (if you want to know more, you got to pick up the TPBs).  But Frank’s going to need his own form of protection as The Avengers decide to assist the NYPD in capturing him.  It’s Punisher vs. The Avengers, written by Greg Rucka, taking place in real Marvel continuity!

Followers of The Walking Dead television show on AMC have just been introduced to Phillip Blake aka The Governor with the beginning of season three, but there’s so much more to find out.  In conjunction with the hit television series, Robert Kirkman (the creator of the show and comic) began a trilogy of Walking Dead novels last year with The Rise of the Governor, which detailed Blake’s life during the initial zombie outbreak.  Now, its sequel, The Road to Woodbury, picks up where the last book left off at, following Blake as he climbs to power in the walled-off city of Woodbury.  Find out the origins of one of the most terrifying villains in comic history by picking up The Road to Woodbury this Wednesday!

If you’ve ever wanted to be Donald Trump…okay, nobody’s ever wanted to be Donald Trump.  If you’ve wanted to be someone who owns as many hotels as Donald Trump, then get ready for a Vegas Showdown!  This new edition of the classic Avalon Hill game retains the same casino construction battle of the previous game, but with an entirely new coat of paint.  If you’ve never played the previous edition, Vegas Showdown pits 3-5 “millionaires” against each other in building the best and brightest hotel on the Vegas strip.  Oh, and if your casino is the most lucrative, you win the entire block.

I am Spartacus!

That’s what you’ll be screaming at the top of your lungs while standing on your couch with your friends awkwardly avoiding your eyeline.  Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery brings the underhanded sadism and conniving machinations of the Starz show to the board game arena.  Players bid, plan, plot, and battle their way through gladiatorial battles, both from the stands and in the arena’s circle.  After huge amount of promising buzz from Gen Con, this is a property game to pick up.

The Dying Earth Revivification Folio is the only RPG out there actually asking you to play as glib jackasses.  Based off of Jack Vance’s novels, this softcover edition is about eloquent wastrels, beguiling magicians, and perverse enchantments.  If you’re a fan of Vance’s work, you’ll be happy to know the Revivification Folio is both a standalone book, giving new players all they’ll ever need, and a companion expansion to the original core rulebook.  Get jackassin’, folks!

Literally fly your colors with the expansions for the sky pirates miniature warship game, Leviathans.  The French Fleet Box includes the French battleship, light cruiser, and two destroyer plastic miniatures from the core box, but also includes alternate Ship Cards for expanding your fleet.  The British Fleet Box contains the same goodies but for Queen and country.  A high-quality game for the steampunk and wargaming fanatics out there.
