Nextwave complete collectionNextwave Agents of HATE Complete Collection tpb

-Not something we regularly do, but with this collection we’re highlighting a reprint.

-But why do that, you might ask?  Well, simply put:  Nextwave is considered by the Pulp staff to be one of Marvel‘s best comic series ever!

-Written by one of comic’s greats, Warren Ellis (Trees, Planetary, Transmetropolitan), and illustrated by new Star Wars artist, Stuart Immonen, this series is pure perfection!

-One of Marvel‘s funniest comics ever, as a ragtag group of heroes (including Machine Man, Boom-Boom, and Captain F&*!) fight against a SHIELD-esque organization called HATE.  In the course of the series, the group battles Cuddly Wittle Drop Bears of Death, a talking dinosaur, a horny Fing Fang Foom, and, in general, political correctness.

Drive #1 (of 4)Drive

-Cool, neon, neo-noir about desperate criminals, sultry dames, and close calls.

-Adapted from James Sallis’ novel.

-A nameless driver makes the choice to cross a menacing LA mobster.  Who comes out on top is all based on skill.

Zodiac StarforceZodiac Starforce #1

-Dark Horse jumps onto Boom! Studios bandwagon of colorful, manga-influenced, ebullient comics!

-Zodiac Starforce is clearly born out of a nostalgia and love for Power Rangers and Sailor Moon!

-In issue #1, you’ll be introduced to a team of superpowered female fighters who defend the Earth from aliens in-between high school classes.

-Where the twist comes in, though, is that future issues jump into the future, after the ladies are out of school, and must reform the Zodiac Starforce after having broken up.

The Squidder #1 (of 4)The Squidder #1

-Cult favorite artist, Ben Templesmith (Ten Grand, 30 Days of Night, Fell), unveils a miniseries he’s always wanted to write!

-A four issue miniseries from IDW, The Squidder is grim, gritty, vast, and epic, much like Prophet or Black Science.

-Set in the far, far future, The Squidder follows a veteran military man who is making a bold, last ditch effort to defeat the alien overlords of the planet.

-Templesmith is a huge Lovecraft fan and, as such, has infused this series with all sorts of Eldar Gods tentacle goodness.

Dark Engine #1Dark Engine #1

-Image Comics has been on an unprecedented roll lately, releasing original comic after original comic.  Dark Engine is the next one.

-John Bivens, an up-and-coming artist, provides interiors and covers for the series in a gorgeous style similar to work from Heavy Metal and Emma Rios’ sketchy style from Pretty Deadly.

-Sounding unlike any other series currently being printed, Dark Engine is about a time traveling killing machine sent back to the far, far past to kill her makers.

-Dragons, androids, jungle warfare, and more are promised for future issues in this ongoing series.

Coffin Hill #1

-Netflix‘s Hemlock Grove ain’t got nothing on Vertigo‘s Coffin Hill!

-Eve Coffin has always known the good life, thanks to being born into one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts (a family who may have descended from the Salem Witches), but, after tampering with dark magics, her wealth isn’t going to be enough to save her.

-Caitlin Kittredge, author of the Black London series of novels, brings a knack for supernatural horror to Vertigo‘s 2013  revitalization.

-The morning after Eve and her hedonistic friends perform some black magic in the woods, she wakes up, naked and covered in blood, to find that the “dark things” have taken her friends!

Forever Evil Arkham War #1 (of 6)

-Villain’s Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean the bad guys are back into their prison cells.  In fact, quite the opposite.

-Spinning out of the first issue of Forever Evil, Arkham War #1 takes place in a Batman-less Gotham City after all of the inmates of Arkham Asylum have been released by the Crime Syndicate.

-Peter J. Tomasi (writer of Batman & Robin) weaves a bloody tale of psychopathic battle, as all of Batman‘s greatest foes fight for control of Gotham City.

-And if it’s only bad guys in Gotham some of them have to be more good than the others, right?

Shaolin Cowboy #1

-Never before has such violence and insanity been presented in such gorgeous detail as Shaolin Cowboy #1!

-Yes, the chainsaw wielding, talking donkey riding cowboy of lore has return from the sunset from whence he rode into years before!

-Geof Darrow, who both writes and draws here, is a legend in the business, rarely ever drawing full interiors for a comic, but as Shaolin Cowboy is his baby, he graces everyone with his extreme skill for grisly detail.  Modern artists like Frank Quietly (Jupiter’s Legacy) and Chris Burnham (Batman, Inc.) owe their entire careers to Darrow!

-Don’t worry about intricate plots or romance or long form mysteries here, Shaolin Cowboy is all about indiscriminate violence drawn in the most beautiful way possible.

Superman/Wonder Woman #1

-Any who thinks comics can’t be read by women and men is 100% wrong!  And Superman/Wonder Woman #1 is here to prove it!

-Charles Soule (who writes the best book at DC right now, Swamp Thing) has been handed two of DC‘s most iconic heroes and allowed to play.  Things will get messy.

-The power couple of power couples, Kal-El and Diana have faced some rough conflicts before, but when Diana’s godly relatives decide to call upon Superman‘s arch foes for assistance, the two will be put through a ringer that’ll test their love.

-And with two near-immortal heroes at the center of the book, who can Soule possibly pit against them?  Three words:  Zod and Doomsday.
