Midnighter v.1 tpbMidnighter v.1 tpb

-One of DC‘s most underrated, under read series being released right now!  Now’s your chance to catch up.

-Midnighter is a Batman-esque anti-hero from the former Wildstorm universe, but, unlike Batman, Midnighter has no reservations about punching his fist literally through someone’s face.

-Writer Steve Orlando crafts a wonderful slow build story where Midnighter juggles his dating life (after recently having broken up with his boyfriend) and the apprehension of wayward weapons he was supposed to protect.

-Each aspect is brought to explosively stylistic life by the unique art style of Aco; trust me, it looks nothing like any series you’re currently reading.

Snowfall #1Snowfall

-From an established creative duo, Snowfall is the newest ongoing series launched from Image Comics!

-Part pulp, part dystopic future, part superhero story, Snowfall blends genres for a comic experience you won’t find at either of the major two companies.

-Set in a world that has not experienced snow in decades and also suffers under the rule of a despotic corporate entity, the series sees a hero, named the White Wizard, rise from obscurity to battle oppression.

-Martin Morazzo’s detailed, dynamic artwork brings this alternate world to life!

Avengers Standoff Welcome to Pleasant HillAvengers Standoff: Welcome to Pleasant Hill #1

-Avid readers of Marvel‘s various Avengers series will want to check this prelude issue out!

-The Avengers Standoff event will crossover all of the Avengers series, including New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, Illuminati, and more.

-Written by Nick Spencer, the current writer of both the Astonishing Ant-Man and Sam Wilson Captain America, this tie-in event will feature three eras of Cap joining forces.

-When Bucky Barnes appears to have attacked a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, Steve Rogers is left with the job of capturing him.  Will Steve and Bucky’s friendship get in the way?  Will Sam Wilson have to be the voice of reason?

Power Man and Iron Fist #1Power Man and Iron Fist

-In preparation of Marvel‘s next two Netflix original series, the Power Man and Iron Fist ongoing returns these two heroes to their for hire heyday.

-David Walker, the acclaimed author behind the recent Shaft comics and DC‘s Cyborg series, jumps to Marvel.

-Walker is accompanied by Sanford Greene, a rising talent who’s exaggerated, caricature-ish style is brimming with energy and character.

-Danny and Luke get engulfed by the New York crime scene as they track down a magical stone that threatens to destroy the city.

The GoddamnedThe Goddamned #1

-Personally vouched for by Dennis Hopeless as the best script he’s ever read from Jason Aaron.

-Local creator Jason Aaron (Thor, Dr. Strange, Star Wars, Southern Bastards) reteams with R.M. Guera, his artist from Scalped!

-Set nearly 2000 years after the Garden of Eden, The Goddamned takes place on a wild, chaotic, barbaric Earth.  Prior to the flood, humanity is vicious and violent.

-Pitched as Conan meets the Bible.

Limbo #1 (of 6)Limbo

-Take a chance on two creators new to Image Comics!

-Drenched in eighties nostalgia and neon!

-Essentially a detective narrative, Limbo is set in a fictional city that is suffocating the lead character (a P.I. with no memory or name) as he attempts to locate the femme fatale.

-Supernatural elements, like voodoo, collide with crime fiction.

All New All Different AvengersAll New All Different Marvel November Part 1

-There’s so many books coming out from Marvel this week, we had to break them up into two sections!

-Mark Waid’s flagship Avengers series, All New All Different Avengers finally begins!  A completely new team of young heroes, including Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Thor, are unleashed against the Marvel Universe‘s problems.

-All New Hawkeye may have the same creative team, but its cast receives a major shake-up!  Old Clint Barton from the Old Man Logan world teams up with a mature Kate Bishop to right wrongs.

-Speaking of shake-ups, Tom Taylor (Injustice: Gods Among Us, Earth 2, Superior Iron Man) introduces X-23 as Wolverine in All New Wolverine!

All New All Different Marvel November Part 2The Ultimates

-A cult favorite character, madman Cletus Kasady hungers for his blood in the ongoing Carnage series!

-The bad guys are in charge in Al Ewing’s (Loki:  Agent of Asgard, Mighty Avengers, New Avengers) new Illuminati series, starring The Hood, Black Ant (the evil Ant-Man), Enchantress, and other villains scrapping for survival.

-Al Ewing is also launching another Avengers-esque team, The Ultimates.  An eclectic cast, The Ultimates includes Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Galactus (yup, you read that right), and others.

Art OpsArt Ops #1

-Following on the heels of other Vertigo relaunch series, like Survivor’s Club and Clean Room!

-Famed independent artist Michael Allred (Madman, Silver Surfer, FF, iZombies) illustrates the series!

-The Art Ops organization ferries away people and objects, like the Mona Lisa, out of paintings in order to bring them into the real world.

Howling Commandos of SHIELD #1Howling Commandos of Shield

-Spinning out of Mark Waid’s SHIELD #9!

-This series, however, is written by pulp-master extraordinaire, Frank J. Barbiere, author of the excellent Image series Five Ghosts!

-Hidden below S.H.I.E.L.D.’s facilities lies S.T.A.K.E., the secret organization that houses all of the monsters and creatures capture on missions.

-This series will follow a team of those monsters, including Hit Monkey, Man-Thing, and Werewolf by Night, as they are lead on missions by a reanimated Dum Dum Dugan!

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1Unbeatable Squirrel Girl  #1 (again!)

-As the cover proclaims, only the second #1 issue this year!

-Easily Marvel’s funniest series (Yes, even over Howard the Duck) continues where it left off!

-Doreen already had trouble balancing her superhero and college lives, but now she has to add being a New Avenger to that list.

-She’s beaten Galactus, now who will challenge the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl?

Black Magick #1Black Magick

-Greg Rucka (Star Wars:  Journey to The Force Awakens, Punisher, Gotham Central) launches a mystical noir series at Image Comics!

-Rucka is joined by artist Nicola Scott (Earth 2, Secret Six, Birds of Prey)!

-Rowan Black, the book’s protagonist, works homicide, but the greatest mystery she has to solve is her own past.

Survivor’s Club #1Survivor's Club

-DC Vertigo is on the cusp of a resurgence, and Survivor’s Club is leading the way!

-Packing some serious horror credentials, Survivor’s Club is co-written by horror author Lauren Beukes!

-Ryan Kelly, artist of Local, Saucer Country, Northlanders, Coffin Hill, and many other independent comic darlings, provides his exaggerated, emotional art style to this surreal horror series.

-In addition to all of those benefits, the premise of Survivor’s Club is killer!  Six teenage survivors of various horror movie genres (slasher, exorcism, haunted house, etc.) unite to solve the mysterious of the world.

Paper GirlsPaper Girls #1

-Another new ongoing series from one of comics’ best writers, Brian K. Vaughn (Y the Last Man, Saga, We Stand on Guard, Ex Machina)!

-Vaughn is joined by stylistic maestro, Cliff Chiang, fresh off of his epic from of Wonder Woman!  Chiang is bringing all of the eighties, neon nostalgia to this period series.

-Set in the late 1980s, Paper Girls follows four adolescent teenage girls who stumble into a mystery that will change their lives forever.

-Issue #1 is oversized at forty pages, but still sports a price tag of $2.99!

All New All Different Marvel Week OneDoctor Strange

-Invincible Iron Man #1 spearheads the relaunch of the Marvel Universe, featuring a fresh take on Tony as he remodels his suit and his life.  We’ve already read the issue, and loved the poppy dialog and swift pacing of the art!

-Spinning out of the online game, Contest of Champions is an ongoing series that sees deceased and lost Marvel heroes fighting to return to the land of the living on an alternate world called Battlerealm, ruled over by Maestro Hulk!

-Dan Slott returns to Amazing Spider-Man, but presents a new spin on Peter Parker that edges closer to James Bond than the frazzled nerd of Spider-Mans past.

-If you pick up one new Marvel series next week, make it Doctor Strange!  Written by KC local, Jason Aaron (Scalped, Star Wars, Thor, Weirdworld, Southern Bastards), Doctor Strange #1 sees Stephen Strange coming to a harsh realization that magic has an equal and opposite cost.  In effect, casting spells becomes a rare, dangerous occurrence that must be weighed carefully.  Oh, and the use of a battleaxe becomes way more prevalent!

The Mighty Avengers #1

-The Avengers are away and Thanos is here to play!  He plays a little rough, though.

-Luke Cage and a conglomeration of street-level heroes (including the Superior Spider-Man, Monica Rambeau, White Tiger, and the mysterious Spider-Hero) are all that’s left to fend off Thanos‘ generals!

-Marvel finally listened to fans and is providing a series with a little diversity to it!  When was the last time you saw three black superheroes on a team with only one white hero?  Yeah, never.  Glad to say it happens here.

-Join Pulp for the Launch Party of this book on Wednesday!  Each copy purchased earns you a special Mighty Avengers trading card!  Also, be on the lookout for a number of special variant covers, including one by fan-favorite Skottie Young!

Sons of Anarchy #1

-The cult favorite FX series, Sons of Anarchy, continues in this limited miniseries from Boom Studios!

-Having cultivated a selection of intelligent, faithful series of comics adapted from television and film (like Adventure Time, Robocop, and Eureka), Boom! is the perfect publisher to handle this series!

-Tig must protect the daughter of a former SAMCO member at all costs!

-Christopher Golden, a popular sci-fi and fantasy novelist, is in charge of this adaptation, making sure to stay faithful to the characters and feel of the show.

East of West v.1 tpb

-Written by author of Manhattan Projects, Infinity, Avengers, New Avengers, God is Dead, and Secret, Jonathan Hickman!

-Set in an alternate universe where the four horsemen of the apocalypse have descended upon the Earth, technology has advanced to a unbelievable level, and the country was shattered into factions following the civil war.

-A perfect entry point for the series, this first volume collects issues 1-5 for the low price of $9.99!

DC Villain’s Month Week 2

-This week sees the release of thirteen more villain-centric titles in both 2D and 3D covers (though the latter are bound to go fast!).

-If you’ve been reading Batman Zero Year by Scott Snyder, you’re definitely going to want to snag the Riddler issue as it is written by Snyder, himself, and drawn by local favorite, Jeremy Haun!

-Geoff Johns lends his creative keyboard to the story for the Black Manta issue this week.  If you picked up Forever Evil #1, you know that Manta has just been broken out of prison and given Aquaman‘s trident.  What will he do next?
