Con Man SpectrumCon Man’s Spectrum #1

-Aching for a Firefly reunion?  Con Man’s Spectrum may be the closest we get for awhile.

-Based off of the fan favorite webseries, this ongoing comic delves into the show-within-the-show.

-Not only does the series follow the characters played by Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk, but it is also co-written by Tudyk, himself.

-Depicting episodes of the show-within-the-show, Spectrum, this series sees Fillion and Tudyk’s characters outrunning an alien race in an untested spaceship.

-Eric Powell, the creator of The Goon and Big Man Plans, is back with a new ongoing series!

-This series will also see a crossover with one of Powell’s other popular characters, Buzzard!

-Following a mountainous fur trapper who lives among the Appalachian mountains, Hillbilly finds him battling and mingling with the fantasy creatures who reside in the forest.  Including a feral dog-boy!

-If you think The Goon is crazy, just see what sort of debauchery Powell can unleash writing and illustrating under his own imprint!

-The first in a series of all-ages graphic novels for female readers!

-DC has heard the outcry for action figures and content that appeals and connects with women.

-All of your favorite DC heroines, like Harley Quinn, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and Poison Ivy, are just trying to make it through superhero high school when a mysterious villain gets in their way.

-Yancy Labat’s art style is cartoonish and colorful in the same vein as Bee and Puppycat, Lumberjanes, and Adventure Time!

-We’ve been telling everyone to read this comic for months!  Now is the time to jump on!

-Slowly building a name for himself, Tom King received the Batman writing gig based off of the critical acclaim of this series.

-Combines qualities from The Stepford Wives, Desperate Housewives, David Lynch, and various horror films into one surreal, twisted package.

-After being rebooted, Vision has built himself an android family (a wife and two children) and moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C.  With the neighborhood distrusting the “robots” who’ve moved in and The Avengers skeptical of Vision’s choices, an unfriendly foe comes knocking.  Things will never be the same.

-With Civil War II in overdrive, Marvel begins turning out four tie-in miniseries this week.

-Out this week are the Civil War II:  Amazing Spider-Man and Civil War II:  Gods of War first issues.

-The inciting incident for Civil War II is the discovery of Ulysses, an Inhuman who can predict the future.  When he predicts that one of Peter Parker’s closest friends will betray him, Spider-Man has to dig deep to uncover the mole in his organization.

-While the Civil War threat rages on, Hercules discovers a related obstacle that needs defeating.  While the Avengers are busy, however, Hercules will have to assemble a team of mythic heroes to quell the problem.

Prometheus: Life and Death #1 (of 4)Prometheus Life and Death

-Another miniseries in the Life and Death Dark Horse crossover that began with Predator:  Life and Death.

-Acclaimed writer Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy, Aquaman) continues where he left off with Predator:  Life and Death.

-Spinning out of the events of that previous miniseries, Prometheus:  Life and Death follows the Colonial Marines after they have outrun the Predators.

-Unfortunately, the ship they have stolen crash lands on LV-223, the planet where the Engineers built the Xenomorphs.

-Boom! and DC join forces for a crossover miniseries that no one knew they wanted, but were thrilled to receive once it was announced!

-Lumberjanes is one of Boom! Studios‘ flagship titles, having earned numerous Eisner Awards and countless avid fans who appreciate the inclusive tone and wacky humor of the series.

-Gotham Academy has also earned an army of fans, but on the DC side of the street.  Essentially a Harry Potter-equivalent for the DC Universe, Gotham Academy follows a group of plucky teens at a private school in Gotham as they uncover mysteries and battle ghosts, ghouls, and other creatures.

-As both groups are addicted to solving mysteries, a spooky building hidden in the woods draws them together for an all-ages adventure.

DC Rebirth Week 2Wonder Woman Rebirth #1

-Returning to their original numbering (adding all of the interceding New 52 issues) Action Comics and Detective Comics return.  Action Comics will star an empowered Lex Luthor as he fills Superman‘s shoes, while Detective Comics sees Batman and Batwoman training an Bat-Family army that includes Spoiler, Tim Drake, and Clayface.

-After Geoff Johns established Aquaman as one of the DC Universe‘s greatest heroes, Dan Abnett picks up the reins sending Arthur Curry on a dangerous mission to battle Black Manta while brokering peace between Atlantis and the surface world.

-Spinning out of the mind-blowing events of DC Universe Rebirth #1, Joshua Williamson (Birthright, Ghosted, The Illuminati) takes over the Flash series with Barry Allen at the center.

-Greg Rucka (Black Magick, Batman, 100 Bullets) returns to Wonder Woman, a series he received ample acclaim for writing in the early 2000s!  A close loss and the removal of a classic weapon lead Wonder Woman on a journey to reclaim her position as Themascyra’s ambassador.

-Have you missed on the ebullient fun that is Lumberjanes (Eisner winner!) and Giant Days?  Don’t miss out again!

-Boom! Studios mainstay, Kate Leth, will be writing the series, bringing to bare her previous experience on Adventure Time Fionna and Cake, Bravest Warriors, and Edward Scissorhands.

-Prophecies in most narratives revolve around epic heroes and legendary heroines.  Power Up is not that story.

-Instead, the heroes of prophecy are an apathetic woman in her late twenties, a past-his-prime athlete, a mother of two, and a goldfish.  Yes, you read that last one right.

-Ales Kot is gaining a reputation as the Hunter S. Thompson of comics, writing some of the most psychedelic, trippy series in recent years.

-Now, Kot launches Wolf, an ongoing detective/crime story from Image Comics!

-But unlike your Chinatowns and Maltese Falcons, Wolf will have hints of the supernatural, akin to True Detective or the Dresden Files.

-Fair warning, there may also be a fair share of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, for those that are so inclined.

JLA Gods and Monsters BatmanJLA Gods and Monsters Batman #1

-Leading up to the release DC‘s newest animated movie, this series of one-shots will detail the alternate reality versions of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

-Bruce Timm, co-creator of Batman the Animated Series, is overseeing and writing all of these one-shots.

-Each of these one-shots will feature a done-in-one story about the origins of these drastically altered characters.

-In the Batman issue, readers will find out how Kirk Langstrom, not Bruce Wayne, became the vampire Batman of this world!

-Vic Stone, a founding member of the New 52 Justice League, finally receives his own ongoing series!

-Cyborg has received upgrades before, but, at the beginning of this series, he’s receives a complete overhaul!

-Writer David Walker introduces a slew of new villains for Cyborg to battle, including the Technosapiens, an alien race that want to devour Vic’s own tech.

-Bringing of this insanity to life is one of DC‘s best house artists, Ivan Reis (Blackest Night, Justice League, Green Lantern).

ThorsSecret Wars Battlworld Week 4

-After a three week deluge of new Secret Wars tie-ins, Marvel lets up slightly for the fourth week.

-Essentially the Marvel Universe‘s anti-Justice League, the Squadron Sinister (previously Supreme) are blazing a trail across Battleworld, participating in fisticuffs with every team they cross paths with.

-Every Battleworld needs a school and the new Runaways miniseries is all about class!  Written by Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes), Runaways brings back some of the original team alongside new characters like a young Winter Soldier, Cloak and Dagger, and Valeria Richards.

-Taking the place of the stellar Thor series, Thors focuses on the Battleworld police force as they solve mysteries and break cases (cue the CSI:  Miami screech).  Oh, and Marvel writer extraordinaire, Jason Aaron, returns to helm this series! Plants vs Zombies Bully for You

-Gorgeous, vibrant artwork from Karl Kerschel stands out among other drab, “house style” DC comics.

-There is currently no better series for tween or teen comic readers at DC!  This is a must read for anyone in that age range!

DC June Relaunch Week 3Justice League of America #1

-After three weeks, the flagship title of DC‘s June Relaunch is here!  Justice League of America, both written and illustrated by Bryan Hitch (America’s Got Powers, The Ultimates, The Authority), reunites the seven major DC heroes to battle evil!

-Fans of the current Batgirl run will want to pick up Black Canary #1 from the same creative team!

-A new hero takes over the golden helmeted mantle of Dr. Fate while Scott Lobdell re-imagines Doomsday as a Hulk-like teenager with a Jekyll and Hyde problem in Doomed.

-Rounding out this week are Harley Quinn and Power Girl (by the same creative team as the solo series), Robin Son of Batman (starring Damien Wayne), Martian Manhunter, and Prez (about the first teenage president elected by Twitter).

-Seems like only yesterday that Rick Remender launched the Marvel NOW! flagship title, Uncanny Avengers.  Well, everything old is new again.

-Spinning out of the events of Avengers vs. X-Men Axis, this relaunched Uncanny Avengers series is a fresh jumping-on point for new readers.

-What an unusual team!  Sabertooth takes over the role of Wolverine, while Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, and the Vision.  Oh, and the fan favorite Brother Voodoo also makes his triumphant return!
