The Missouri/Kansas rivalry has seeped into basketball, politics, and history. Now it’s found its way into comics.

Geoff Johns and David Finch spread the Justice League love to the land of stars and stripes with Justice League of America #1. And, yes, we’re going to have the special Missouri and Kansas flag variant covers. Now, as to the actual content of the comic. IT’S GONNA BE AWESOME! Geoff Johns has been writing Justice League since the beginning of the New 52, bringing his talent for reinvention to the big shots of the DC Universe, but now it’s his time to dig into the supporting characters. An eclectic team C-List heroes like Hawkman, Stargirl, Vibe, Green Arrow, Catwoman, Martian Manhunter, and more are hired by the government as their own personal, super-powered task force. The real selling point here is that Geoff Johns understands character. He’s proven it time and again on ensemble books like Justice Society of America, Teen Titans, and Justice League, given an assortment of unusual characters, Johns will make you love them.

Prepare your bro hooves.

My Little Pony, the fan-favorite and cult hit cartoon, became a fan-favorite, cult hit comic book last year. Now, another Pony book has arrived. MLP Micro is a six issue miniseries that focuses on six of the most popular ponies of the series on their own unique adventure. First up, this Wednesday, is Twilight Sparkle (yeah, you knew that’s who it would be). Having fallen in love with a series of novels, Twilight sets out on a journey to find the books’ author when she finds out it never finished. Alert the Bronies!

Jeph Loeb, author of Batman: Long Halloween, Ultimate Comics X, Dardevil Yellow, and much more, lost his son, Sam, about five years ago to cancer. Sam, by all accounts, was a positive, joyful joker who made everyone smile and was always ready for an adventure. In honor of Sam, Jeph Loeb has created a new Nova for the Marvel NOW! universe, Sam Alexander, imbued with all the qualities of his own son. Outside of the personal connection, Sam “Nova” Alexander has a mysterious background that will be explained over the course of the series as he eases into his heroic moniker. After making his debut in Avengers vs. X-Men and Marvel NOW! Point One, Sam is getting his own series with top-notch writer Loeb and stylized art master, Ed McGuinness!

Fresh on the heels of the announcement that 2013 will bring another release in the impressive Batman Arkham Asylum video game series, the third set of Arkham City action figures hit shelves this Wednesday. As per usual, this set brings with it another version (the best, in my opinion) of the Batman himself, this time in his original costume, detailed to the extreme! Fleshing out this assortment are three beloved characters, Deadshot, Talia al Ghul, and Nightwing, complete with his electrified batons. This week is Marvel‘s week. Beezees. Word up.

Marvel NOW! is in full effect, as two of the cornerstone titles hit shelves this Wednesday.

First up, Deadpool #1. Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan, two thinking man’s comedians, are writing the book (their first comic endeavor ever…that rhymed) while the legend himself, Tony Moore (Walking Dead), lends his beautifully twisted pencils to the Merc with the Mouth. The premise for the first arc of this series is so unbelievable, I hesitate to tell you about it.

Okay, you’ve convinced me. All the country’s deceased presidents are coming back to undead life and there’s only one man who’s jerk enough to re-kill them. I think you know who it is.

That Tony Stark needs to learn how to hold onto his inventions. Iron Man #1 by Kieron Gillen and Greg Land re-introduce Tony Stark to a whole new range of readers with this Marvel NOW! starting point issue, where Tony gets his Extremis technology stolen and must develop an entirely new suit of armor to get it back. Gillen has been killing on the Uncanny X-Men AvX tie-ins, bringing the pathos and the action while Greg Land is just a beautiful, painterly artist who will make Tony’s armor look so polished you’ll think you can eat off it. Anyone who loves the Iron Man films but has never read one of his comics NEEDS to check this series out.

If you missed this year’s epic Marvel brawl to end it all, Avengers vs. X-Men, all hope is not lost. Coming out this Wednesday is the complete epic all in one hefty volume. That’s twelve issues for the main series, folks, plus six issues of AvX: Versus, the all fights all the time miniseries that accompanied the main series, and (if that wasn’t enough) three AvX: Infinite issues, which have never been in print before. The entire volume is a treasure trove of the greatest writers and artists working in comics today, featuring names like Jonathon Hickman, Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, Jeph Loeb, Kieron Gillen, Ed Brubaker, Andy Kubert, Oliver Coipel, John Romita, Jr., and many, many, many more. And this thing’s so thick after you get done reading it, you can use it as a coffee table.

You’ve read the novel. You’ve seen the Swedish movie. You’ve seen the American movie. But have you read the graphic novel?

No, obviously not, it’s not out until this Wednesday. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo makes its way to comic shelves this week with a Vertigo graphic novel adaptation by novelist Denise Mina and artists Leonard Manco and Andrea Mutti. If you nabbed the free sample comic from a couple months back, you know that this version of the story plays with silence and ambiance in way the previous incarnations have not. And, if you’ve lived under a rock for the last eight years or so, then you should check the book out anyway as it is one of the best mystery, suspense stories of the decade.

Preparing for this Wednesday’s Halloween ComicFest and actual Halloween, tonight’s Comic List Highlights features numerous creepy tales of horror and suspense, all of which arrive next new comic day. They may not be free like some of the other books for ComicFest, but they are freaky.

First up, for all the kids who still haven’t gone too bed, we’ll start with something a little less spooky. A + X is the new anthology series from Marvel coming out of AvX. Just like the AvX: Versus series, A + X features two separate stories featuring interactions between an Avenger and an X-Man as told by top artists and writers. Issue one has a Wolverine and Hulk story, sure to become a classic, told by Jeph Loeb and famous Hulk artist Dale Keown as well as a Cable and Captain America tale written by Dan Slott and drawn by Ron Garney. A + X is sure to be a fun, fast tale perfect for kids and those who adore classic Marvel missives made in the merry manner!

Alright, all the young’uns off to sleep?

Now for some adult stuff.

Bedlam #1 has been receiving some terrifically terrifying press as being the next huge Image comic series after Happy, Saga, and Revival. Nick Spencer, the notable mad genius behind Morning Glories, Infinite Vacation, and Thief of Thieves, joins forces will the ever-present Riley Rossmo (Rebel Blood, Wild Children, Cowboy Ninja Viking) to weave a narrative of a former psychopath and ruler of a tiny, quite town who used to go by Madder Red but now goes by Fillmore Press. A moody blend of Poe and Lovecraft, Bedlam #1 is an over sized story that’ll keep you hiding under the sheets at day’s end.

Are your teeth chattering in terror yet? No. Then let Steve Niles (30 Days of Night) and Glen Fabry (Preacher) keep you shivering with Lot 13. A rare horror miniseries brought to you by DC Comics, Lot 13 calls back to famous scary films like The Amityville Horror, The Shinning, and Thirteen Ghosts as it relates how a normally happy family stumbles across a haunting apartment complex as they stop over on a cross-country move. Will they all still be alive by the next morning? Read and find out. If you dare.

DC‘s really keeping the hell fires burning this year with another horror series, this one being a one-shot anthology featuring at least ten short comics by, literally, DC‘s top, top talent. That’s Geoff Johns, Jeff Lemire, Paul Pope, Phil Jimenez, Amy Reeder, and one of the last stories by the late, unmatched Joe Kubert. The stories range from a robbery on a futuristic ghost ship, a haunt-for-hire agency, and numerous other inventively chilling campfire yarns. Get in the spirit and pick up this collection about spirits!

If you were to ask any self-respecting nerd what the Doctor and a Dalek have in common, they would likely laugh in your face. And then say something about how bow ties are cool.

But they would be wrong to laugh, because the Doctor and the Daleks do actually share a similarity. They can both light up a dark situation! One with his trusty sonic screwdriver and one with his, uh, butt. Yes, folks, Doctor Who flashlights. The first being a replica of the 11th Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, which emits a glowing green light from its tip, and, the second, a Dalek miniature, which shines a ray off light out of its…well, butt really is the best word for it. One can save the universe while the other will destroy it, but they’re both equally timey wimey awesome.

Many consider Ultimatum by Jeph Loeb to be the worst storyline to ever occur in the Ultimate Marvel universe. Sadly, I believe this has kept many readers from checking out his follow up to that series Ultimate X. Constructed as a tight five issue miniseries, this run by Loeb is among the best stories ever told in Ultimate cannon. Focusing on a different mutant with each issue, Loeb works overtime to shape and convey these characters (some new, some old) to the reader. And does with emotional results. A large part of that success, however, is due to Art Adams insane artwork. Adams drew 616 X-Men back in the day with the best of them and his detailed, emotive pencils have only gotten better. Even if you’ve never read a single issue of the Ultimate X-Men series, the Ultimate X: Origins tpb will compel you to read more.

Before he become THE Neil Gaiman thanks to his cult classic Sandman run, the Neil Gaiman wrote a four issue miniseries for Vertigo comics entitled Black Orchid. Now collected in a beautiful oversized hardcover edition, Black Orchid chronicles the revenge tale of a woman who’s reborn as a half-human, half-plant creature. The etherial artwork of Dave McKean spreads across the pages of this collection, a watercolor on steroids. With such a limited library of titles to explore, any fan of Neil Gaiman owes it to themselves to hunt down this new volume in an effort to complete their collection.

Boba Fett is dead.

So begins the new Dark Horse series, Blood Ties. This new four issue series details the fallout from the death of the galaxy’s greatest, most infamous bounty hunter. A son of a Jango Fett clone, Connor Freeman, gets drawn into the hunt for Fett’s killer, finding more action, adventure, and intrigue than he’s ever experienced before. Rich painted interiors coupled with this interesting story will make this a Star Wars miniseries for the ages.

It is that time of the year. The holidays are upon us, the snow is imminent, the packages are…wait, oh no, I forgot to THAT gift for THAT person! Sweet fancy Moses, what am I going to do?!!! I need it, like, RIGHT NOW!!!!

Don’t worry. Calm down, grab a cup of hot coco, and peruse your way through ole Pulp Fiction’s last minute holiday gift idea post.

To start off, we’ve got a little stocking stuffer for the Marvel fan out there. Avengers X-Sanction starts up this Wednesday and it promises to be a slam-bang, all-out-action fest. Cable has been sent back through time to protect the future (as Cable is apt to do), but this time his mission is to eliminate the Avengers. This, of course, rubs guys like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man the wrong way. Fighting, smashing, punching, bashing, exploding, and general disharmony will ensue. Bringing Jeph Loeb (Batman Long Halloween) back together with Ed McGuinness (Hulk), Avengers X-Sanction is sure to be a gorgeous, action packed book.

Next up, one for the Guillermo del Toro-vampire-novel-Chuck Hogan fan (any fan of these individually would also apply). Based off of the novel Hogan and del Toro co-wrote, The Strain #1 combines vampires stories with the idea of a worldwide outbreak. The plot: a plane lands at JFK, but when it doesn’t empty its passengers a team is called into investigate. Wonder what they’ll find? Barrowing the stylized artwork of Mike Huddleston (Butcher Baker, the Righteous Maker), this book’ll satisfy the horror fanatic in your household.

Time for some statues. ’Cause statues are cool.

As is the Doctor.

Yup, Matt Smitth, 11th Doctor, now has his own sharp looking mini bust. I can almost hear the Sonic Screwdriver it looks so real.

And since we’re talking statues, I might as well mention the newest DC Dynamic edition, The Joker. I have seriously been waiting for this thing to come out for months and months. Out of a series of statues that have looked absolutely amazing, this is far and away the best! The way they’ve incorporated the gas from the gas bombs into the base is brilliant and quite colorful. If you know a Joker fan or someone who’s been collecting the DC Dynamic statues, this is a must have!

Mark Millar is the most talented human to ever touch a keyboard in all of time or space. Or so he would tell you. The fact is, Millar is one heck of a writer having turned out sensational, classic stories like Wanted, Kick-Ass, The Ultimates, Nemesis, and Old Man Logan, but many forget he ever touched Marvel‘s golden child, Spider-Man. Luckily, Marvel did not forget and is packaging all of his Spider-Man related material together in one big Ultimate Collection. As you might imagine, Millar made Spider-Man his own by redesigning popular villains like Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, and the Sinister Six. Anyone who thinks they’ve read everything Spider-Man needs to pick up this forgotten gem of a run.

So I’m legally obligated to mention this next product or else I lose my comic book store employee license. Yes, folks, the Fables volume 16 tpb comes out this Wednesday. Whoa, whoa, sit back down, it’s not out yet. When it does hit, though, this collection enters the superhero territory. Pinocchio hits on the bright idea that he can turn his friends into superheroes to battle the enemies of Fabletown. Okay, I know you can’t wait any longer, come set up your tent outside the store.

Lastly tonight is the Pulp Fiction toy corner.

We’ll start with the newest set of Green Lantern action figures. Series 5 contains four characters as usual, most importantly this time around, Sinestro in his Green Lantern uniform and Guy Gardner. The rest of the set is filled out by Soranik Natu (Sinestro‘s daughter) and Brother Warth of the Blue Lantern CORPS.

The grand finale, though, comes with the new Arkham City action figure set. This time around the figures in the set include Batman sans mask, Harley Quinn in her new costume, and Robin. As you can see they are B to the A.
