Alchemists board gameA recurring trend in board gaming lately is the incorporation of phone apps into the mechanics of the game.  Alchemists is the newest example of this tactic as players compete as rival alchemists attempting to publish successful formulas.  An app randomizes the possible outcomes for each formula every time the game is played, resulting in a unique play experience on every replay.

Fans of Akira Kurosawa’s magnum opus, Seven Samurai, should take a look at one of Samurai Stylethe newest cooperative gaming experiences on the market, Samurai Spirit.  In this co-op card game, one to seven players take on the roles of brave samurai defending a poor farming village.  Over the course of multiple turns, each player must decide whether to fight a bandit, defend the village, or aid another samurai.  The delicacy of the game is coordinating a balance between the actions every player takes.  Too many bandits will be let through if the team aids each other too often, but other samurai may perish if they’re not helped.  These are the decisions that will lead to victory.

Batman Love LetterLast week we had Hobbit Love Letter, this week is Batman Love Letter.  Another version of the highly popular card game, like Hobbit Love Letter, actually changes up the gameplay.  In this version of the game, the point values per card remain the same, but the goal is to “capture” the highest cost villain at the end of the round.  The deck is comprised of famous Batman baddies like The Joker, Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, and some good guys, too, like Batman and Robin.

Finally tonight, we’ll venture off into a galaxy far, far away.  After the well received arrival of the StaImperial Assault expansion packsr Wars Imperial Assault miniature battle game, Fantasy Flight has been quick to turn some individual miniature expansion packs.  Each of these Ally and Villain Packs contain an individual miniature accompanied by new missions to run and unique cards.  Out these weekend on the Ally side are Han Solo, Chewbacca, rebel sabetours, and rebel troopers and on the Villain side are IG-88, General Weiss, and the Royal Guard Champion.

Bang! Walking DeadZombies have come to Bang!

Out this weekend, the newest variation of the popular deception game, Bang!, is a Walking Dead edition.  In this version, the standard deputy, sheriff, outlaw, and other designations are replaced with leader, savior, survivor, and loner.  Each player takes on one of these roles while playing a character from the hit TV series. The Witcher Adventure Game

Based off the popular series of novels and video games, The Witcher receives a board game adaptation this weekend.  The Witcher Adventure Game throws players into a fantasy scenario where they control one of four characters, including Triss Merigold, Yarpen Zigrin, Geralt, and Dandelion, each represented by a deck of ability cards.  Choosing which character to play also decides how a player will approach each encounter, as some characters favor magic while other Warhammer Conquest The Howl of Blackmane War Packfavor diplomacy or attacking.

Warhammer‘s recently released deck building game, Warhammer 40K Conquest, receives its first expansion deck with The Howl of Blackmane.  Included in this expansion is a playable Space Marine character and his supporting unit, comprised of three sets of seventeen cards, similar to any of the expansion packs to Fantasy Flight‘s other Living Card Games.Diamonds

Another trick-taking card game, similar to Clubs, Rowboat, or Spades, Diamonds changes up the common mechanic for a new experience.  Players take turns laying down suited cards, attempting to match the previous suit.  However, if a player cannot match the suit they are given they are awarded a “suit action,” which allow the Wings of Glory Special Packsmovement of cards from different piles of cards.

Coming in off the flight deck this weekend is a full set of four new World War II Wings of Glory Special Packs.  Each of these Special Packs includes a full-sized airplane model for use in the Wings of Glory ship-to-ship battle game.  This series includes the BF-17F Memphis Belle, the BF-17G Bit of Lace, Avro Lancaster B MK III v.1, and the Avro Lancaster B MK III v.2.Star Trek Attack Wing Deep Space 9

Formerly only a tournament exclusive miniature, the Deep Space Nine space station is finally out to purchase at retail stores.  This oversized model can be incorporated into the Star Trek Attack Wing miniature battle game as either a ship or a scenario.

X-Wing Decimator FreighterFollowing the release of the Star Wars:  The Force Awakens trailer, the X-Wing miniature game keeps the hype going with two large miniature expansions.  First up, is the VT-49 Decimator, an imperial gunship that pushes the limits of size within the standard play scenarios.  The Decimator expansion also includes thirteen different upgrade cards, including fan favorite Mara Jade.  Second, the only ship that will do when the Millennium Falcon is tied up, the YT-2400.  Dash Rendar, Han Solo’s understudy, is included as a character card with the expansion, along with many Dungeons and Dragons Dungeon Master's Guideothers.

The much delayed Dungeon Master’s Guide for Dungeons and Dragons Next (or 5.0, if you wish) is finally here!  This new edition distills the best material from all past versions of the DM’s Guide, including rules from 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.  Besides providing information about the three core elements of a DM’s Guide, those being world and adventure building, rules essentials, and magic items, the hardcover also contains helpful hints and tips, like how to design a villain and treasure tables.
