Who you gonna call?

Well, in the case of The Phantom Society, the ghosts.

The Phantom Society is a fresh take on the haunted house game from Asterion Press.  Playable from two to four players, the game gives you the option of controlling the ghosts or the ghost hunters, both trapped in an aging hotel.  The former group is hellbent on causing destruction and haunting the guests, while the latter what to get famous by trapping some poltergeists.  Just don’t play it with the lights off…cause, you know, it’d be hard to see.

In Trains, the new edition designed by Hisashi Hayashi, players start with a small set of cards, but by building a more effective deck throughout the game, they will be able to place stations and lay rails over the maps of Osaka or Tokyo.  Gain enough points from your railways and you will ultimately manage the most powerful railroads in modern Japan.

Zombies!!! 12:  Zombie Zoo not only adds a new challenge to the Zombies!!! universe, in the form of a zoo challenge, but also six new types of zombies, including lions, tigers, polar bears, hyenas, monkeys, and gorillas.  Each of these undead animals will come between you and your goals, so work quickly!

Survive the Battle of Helm’s Deep!

The Lord of the Rings:  The Two Towers deck-building game expansion allows players to continue playing through the popular film franchise in card form.  This expansion introduces special cards that are automatically given to the starting hands of each Fellowship member, as well as card combos and a Wall of Helm’s Deep gaming scenario that adds a new layer to the gameplay.

Control the rise of six new civilizations in Civilization:  Wisdom and Warfare!

The fates of the Aztecs, English, French, Japanese, Mongols, and Zulu lie within your grasp.  Social policy cards give governments greater depth and power, while a new combat system makes battles more tactical and tense than ever before.  This expansion also adds new map tiles, new relics, and a new type of building.

The Heroes vs. Monsters Duel Deck contains ten rare cards and two mythic card, including Figure of Destiny, Sun Titan, and Deus of Calamity, as well as a preview card of Polukranos, World Eater, a mythic rare from Theros.  As usual, each of these decks is fully built and ready to play out of the box, a perfect set to learn on if you’re a new player!

With the Veterans of the Seas, the newest Tsuro expansion, you’ll be able to add more excitement to your game with the Tsunami and Uzushio (whirl pool) tiles.  However, this tile set also provides you with hope in the form of Cannons and the Mystic Portal may help you to overcome the devastation and be victorious!

Fire up your hyperdrive and embark on a journey to the farthest regions of the Star Wars galaxy.  Intrepid explorers, scrappy smugglers, and adventuresome academics must harness every skill in their arsenal to evade Imperial forces, thwart their competition, and finally explore – and survive – an uncharted world.  This full length adventure includes all-new adversaries, vehicles, and location ready for play in the Edge of the Empire RPG.

If you’ve ever wanted to be Donald Trump…okay, nobody’s ever wanted to be Donald Trump.  If you’ve wanted to be someone who owns as many hotels as Donald Trump, then get ready for a Vegas Showdown!  This new edition of the classic Avalon Hill game retains the same casino construction battle of the previous game, but with an entirely new coat of paint.  If you’ve never played the previous edition, Vegas Showdown pits 3-5 “millionaires” against each other in building the best and brightest hotel on the Vegas strip.  Oh, and if your casino is the most lucrative, you win the entire block.

I am Spartacus!

That’s what you’ll be screaming at the top of your lungs while standing on your couch with your friends awkwardly avoiding your eyeline.  Spartacus: A Game of Blood and Treachery brings the underhanded sadism and conniving machinations of the Starz show to the board game arena.  Players bid, plan, plot, and battle their way through gladiatorial battles, both from the stands and in the arena’s circle.  After huge amount of promising buzz from Gen Con, this is a property game to pick up.

The Dying Earth Revivification Folio is the only RPG out there actually asking you to play as glib jackasses.  Based off of Jack Vance’s novels, this softcover edition is about eloquent wastrels, beguiling magicians, and perverse enchantments.  If you’re a fan of Vance’s work, you’ll be happy to know the Revivification Folio is both a standalone book, giving new players all they’ll ever need, and a companion expansion to the original core rulebook.  Get jackassin’, folks!

Literally fly your colors with the expansions for the sky pirates miniature warship game, Leviathans.  The French Fleet Box includes the French battleship, light cruiser, and two destroyer plastic miniatures from the core box, but also includes alternate Ship Cards for expanding your fleet.  The British Fleet Box contains the same goodies but for Queen and country.  A high-quality game for the steampunk and wargaming fanatics out there.

These posts are starting to be dominated by the Doctor!  Can’t say that’s a bad thing, though.

Something else that is most definitely not a bad thing is the new Doctor Who TPB, Ripper.  This collection contains the first four issues of the newest Doctor Who ongoing series, which introduced Matt Smith’s Doctor into the comics.  In these initial issues, the Doctor deals with uncovering the true identity of Jack the Ripper and helping Inspector Abilene catch the culprit.  Tony Lee, the author, has an excellent grasp on the voices of the Doctor, Rory, and Amy, so it feels like you’re reading an episode of the show.

I doubt anyone reading this likes comics (those things are for kids, right?), but we’ll push our luck and talk about a couple more new ones on here.  The first being a dark Japanese samurai graphic novel called The Last Ninja.  At base a revenge story, The Last Ninja follows Kenji, a wannabe ninja, from childhood to adulthood as he seeks vengeance on the corrupt government.  After the death of his grandfather, a trained ninja, Kenji seeks training and revenge against the government agents who killed his grandpa.

One more, if you please.  Mysterious Ways mixes the comic and video gaming worlds as Jason Rubin of Iron Saint and Crash Bandicoot fame teams with Top Cow to produce a dark mystery book about the hunt for a serial killer.  An ex-cop becomes tied to a series of murders which then leads him into being chased by the FBI.  Funny how that happens, right?  The mysterious part?  Magic.  Come on, what else?

Oh, okay, since you’re begging, one more.  Reprinted from the classic French serials is the first volume of comics master Jacques Tardi‘s The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec.  Some of the more worldly folks out there may have seen the Luc Besson film from last year based on this wild material.  I say wild, because not only do Adele’s adventures take place in an alternate reality 20th century Europe, but there’s a pterodactyl, too!  Basically, Adele is a writer he gets into crazy, sci-fi adventures dealing with mummies, mad scientists, and, as stated, dinosaurs.  The art is obviously terrific as Tardi is legendary in the industry.

Okay, enough comics.  How about some oddly deformed little superhero people?

Yes, tonight we end with two new sets of vinyl offerings from both Marvel and DC.  First up, is the first set of DC Mez-Itz.  These chunky little guys come two to a pack (paired in hero/villain combinations) and contain some of the greatest DC characters including Batman, Joker, Superman, and Green Lantern.  Look at the pictures to the left and marvel.

Speaking of a transition, Marvel also has some large headed vinyl dudes releasing this week.  They include the Pop Vinyl versions of Spider-Man, the Hulk, and two Thor Movie figures (Thor and Loki).  Feast your eyes on the two pictures below.  FEEEEEAAAASSSSST!
