Tiny Epic DefendersCapital City is under attack!  Tiny Epic Defenders of the realm assemble!  Yes, Tiny Epic Defenders is a new tower defense game from Gamelyn Games out this weekend.  In the game, players will work together to defend Capital City from attack by multiple hordes.  These vile villains are encroaching from surrounding towns and must be stopped before they overrun those hamlets on their way to the main city.  Study their patterns, strategize, and collect artifacts to help you fight them off!A Prophecy of Dragons Time Stories

The popular group storytelling/roleplaying-light board game, T.I.M.E. Stories, adds another expansion pack this weekend.  A Prophecy of Dragons includes another ninety minute session for players to incorporate into the base game.  In A Prophecy of Dragons, the time traveling adventures of the game that you control will actually be jumping dimensions, moving to a parallel universe where the middle ages were overrun with magic users.  The world you encounter is drastically different from the one described in our history books.

Happy PigsLast week we had My Happy Farm.  This week, we narrow that down to just Happy Pigs.  A buying and selling family game, Happy Pigs is quick-to-learn and easy-to-play for ages ten and up.  Players compete to purchase, raise, and sell their porcine livestock.  Use funds to purchase baby pigs at the beginning of the game, feed them into adulthood, get them to reproduce, then sell the top choice piggies.  Outside of the cutely designed pig tokens used in the game, Happy Pigs also has a special two player variant those farming inclined couples.  And if pigs aren’t your bag, don’t worry because, for a limited time, each purchase comes with a special Penguins expansion.  La Granja

Farming must be the theme for tonight, because La Granja is our next highlighted game.  From Stronghold Games, La Granja finds players operating farms across the lake from the Spanish village of Esporles.  Over six rounds, will maintain and grow their farm, hiring workers and adding new fields in order to grow produce that will be sold back to the residents of Esporles for a profit.  Keep a close eye on the strategies of other players, however, as turn order can be Smash Up It's Your Fault expansioneffected by dice rolls in order to change the direction of the game.

Everyone loves a new Smash Up expansion, but, in this case, everyone actually contributed to a new Smash Up expansion.  AEG put out a call for factions that fans would like to see incorporated into the popular card game, then chose the winners and released them in the It’s Your Fault expansion.  If you’ve cruised around the Internet for a few short minutes, you might be able to guess the winners that ended up in this expansion.  The four new factions include Sharks, Superheroes, Greek Myths, and Dragons!

Bezier Games releases another version of Suburbia this weekend called, Subdivision.  Operating off of similar mechanics to the original game, players attempt to build the most contemporary, advanced subdivision, constructing buildings, roads, houses, and other structures while also trying to keep them up to code.  Subdivision complicates things, however, by keeping players located into a small, constrained section of the gaming board.Core Worlds Revolution

Ascension Realms UnraveledLike the collectible card game it is based off of, Magic the Gathering, Ascension continues to expand its deck building universe.  Realms Unraveled is the newest expansion for the game, this time around adding Multifaction and Multi-Unite cards that create special deck combinations.Hobbit Tales card game

From the makers of the One Ring roleplaying system comes a storytelling game, akin to Once Upon a Time, set in the Lord of the Rings universe.  Acting as hobbits hanging out at the local watering hole, those playing Hobbit Tales from the Green Dragon Inn utilize story cards to begin constructing a tall tale only The Heart of the Wild One Ringto be interrupted by other players.

While we’re stopping in Middle Earth, let’s take a look at The Heart of the Wild, a new supplement for the One Ring roleplaying game.  A setting supplement, The Heart of the Wild expands descriptions of locations like Mirkwood Forest as well as adding a bestiary full of creatures lurking in these shadowy realms.Cards of Cthulhu

A card game for one to four players, Cards of Cthulhu plays off of the gothic horror of the Lovecraft universe to deliver a deck-based battle game.  Players compete against the AI of the game, which controls the creatures and other baddies, in an attempt to halt the release of the Elder Gods.  Also included in the game is a booklet of original stories set in the universe, crafted by Pagoda board gameauthors like Matt Forbeck, Daniel Keys Moran, and David Gerrold.

A new dexterity game from AEG, Pagoda is a family friendly, easy-to-learn, two player only game of building construction.  Each of the two players utilize cards to add colored pillars to various levels of their pagodas, but once a certain color has been used on a level, that is the only color that can be used.Istanbul game

Another quick, family game from AEG out this week is Istanbul (not Constantinople).  Players navigate their merchant and assistants from market stall to market stall.  On each stall are rubies and goods of various sorts and players utilize their assistants carefully in order to attain more of these items than the other players.

Romance of the Nine Empires Arcane FireOkay, see if you can follow this:  Romance of the Nine Empires is a card game based off of a fictional card game from an independent film called The Gamers:  Hands of Fate that is now real.  Got it?  Good.  Now it has an expansion called Arcane Fire that contains enough cards to create two entirely new factions to be incorporated into the base game.Shadowrun Run and Gun HC

If you’re going to battle against the evil corporations that dot the landscape of the Shadowrun universe you’re going to need a bigger gun.  And maybe, like, forty of them.  To alleviate this problem Catalyst Game Labs has just released a beautiful hardcover of Run and Gun for Shadowrun 5th Edition.  This supplement contains all the information you’ll ever need Galactic Strike Forcefor gun, knife, hand-to-hand, and any other form of combat within the system.

Grab the boards and nails, because Card of the Dead is here!

A draw and play card game set during the zombie apocalypse, Card of the Dead has players drawing action and item cards, playing them to secure themselves from the undead or to battle against them.  Obtaining and playing escape cards is how players win, activating end game after a specific amount have been played.  Or, if you’re the more gruesome type, you can simply see who outlasts everyone else.

Maximum Throwdown is EXACTLY what its name suggests.  From AEGMaximum Throwdown is a physically active card game where players literally throw cards (maximumly?) onto other cards.  However, this is more than a game of fifty-two card pickup, as each card includes icons and emblems that allow the player who threw them to earn special abilities if they’re uncovered.  As one might assume, the goal here is to cover your opponent’s card icons in order to deactivate their abilities while enhancing your own.

The assault has begun!

The fourth adventure pack in the Against the Shadow expansion set for the Lord of the Rings LCG game, Assault on Osgiliath, is out!  All stages of the battle between the Orcs and the Southrons rages onward, these expansion cards convey and detail the action, allowing players to work through the action in cooperative play!

The first deluxe expansion for the Star Wars living card game may be called Edge of Darkness, but it’s all about the grey side of the universe.  A total of 132 new cards expand the game’s objectives, adding an extra 32.  All of these center around two new factions, scum on the dark side and smugglers on the force side.  In short, that’s bounty hunters versus the colleges of Han Solo.

Emperor’s Chosen, the most recent supplement to Fantasy Flight’s Deathwatch series, separates the men from the boys, the chaff from the wheat, the Deathwatch from the Battle Brothers.  Among the Space Marines there are a faction of veteran warriors so revered, so reviled they have earned the title of Battle Brothers.  These daring few are what this supplemental hardcover is all about.  Let your players live the legacy of these unbeatable soldiers by picking up a copy of Emperor’s Chosen.

Avid science fiction junkies take note of Monte Cooke’s Numenera roleplaying system.  Just released, the core rulebook details the far distant future of the Ninth World, a vast world of ancient and advanced technology that houses what remains the human race.  While the Core Rulebook offers all the information about the setting, characters, adventures, and more (all detailed in eye-popping, painterly artwork), the Player’s Guide condenses the information necessary only to players, offering a concise sixty-four page booklet for players to devour.

Completing tonight’s trifecta of roleplaying books is Pathfinder‘s newest release, Mythic Adventures.  As the structures of mythology are as old as time, Mythic Adventures adapts these tropes and plots to the popular roleplaying system.  Players can adventure through mythic “paths” designed for their character, fighting mythic creatures, and casting mythic spells.  There’s a lot of mythic-ness going on here, basically.

Before we begin today, a bit of mood setting.  In that effort, please click below and keep it playing during your reading of the first item.  Thank you all.

Okay, now insert Ultimate Combat when applicable.  That’s right, Pathfinder:  Ultimate Combat has cartwheel kicked its way onto the shelves this week.  Many have perished in its making, but the bloodshed was well worth it as this thick edition expands the Pathfinder universe with more fighty madness than you can shake a katana at.  That includes three completely new classes that every single gamer out there will froth at the mouth to play:  gunslinger, ninja, and samurai.  Enough new equipment and combat information to take down a small army is included side-by-side with a detailing of vehicular combat and over 250 new feats!  If you’re looking to supplement, and by supplement I mean violently beat to a pulp, your Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Ultimate Combat will do so with murderous glee.

Staying with Pathfinder for a second (music is still optional), three other companions and campaign settings arrived this week, as well.  Learn all things goblin (seriously, I think this thing’ll tell you which side of the bed they sleep on) with the Player Companion, Goblins of Golarion.  Follow that up with a chaser of Pathfinder Society Field Guide, which is like an enrollment manual to the Society, laying out for players and GMs alike, all the details about factions, archetypes, Absalom, and everything else needed to flesh out Society characters and campaigns.  Finally, for dessert, Inner Sea Magic, which delves into the nitty-gritty of everything magic related in the Pathfinder world, including spellcaster history, magical schools, variant magic, along with two oracle mysteries.

Since you’ve already got your otherworldly passport handy after the last items, how about a jaunt into the realms of Dungeons & Dragons.  Today we venture to the realm of Neverwinter (sounds like summer in Lee’s Summit) with the new Neverwinter Campaign Setting hardcover.  This supplemental book is like a travel guide to the region, complete with a massive fold-out map.  But it’s not all just pretty pictures here, the hardcover also gets intricate with pages and pages of minute detail about character themes, cleric domains and powers, race variants, and all sorts of adventure-building materials for Dungeon Masters.  Somehow, with all that, the book still manages to introduce a new wizard type known as a bladesinger.  Oh and, uh, if you haven’t noticed, bit of cross promotion, there’s also a new Neverwinter Fortune Card booster expansion.  Hmm, who’da thought?

You remember playing Mouse Trap as a kid?  The Impossible Machine captures that same sense of inventive insanity as players lay down cards in an attempt to build the most inefficient contraption to perform the most menial of tasks.  For instance, maybe you want to pour a glass of water, well in The Impossible Machine players connect cards that represent components like fans, cogs, catapults, and so on toward the eventual goal of completing the overall task.  Each card has an input and an output arrow to indicate what cards can be connected to it.  The game ends when a player has more points than any other player after three machines have been completed.  Would it be too much of a pun to say this is quite the inventive game?

Brush up on your Smurf dialect before reading this next one, folks.  ’Cause it’s gonna get Smurfy up in this Smurf!

Timed perfectly to the release of the new Smurf movie, No Smurf Left Behind is a collectible board smurf that smurfs as a perfect family gaming experience.  Smurfing like a simplified kid-friendly version of Last Night on Earth, players can choose to play one of the five included Smurfs on their way to the portal home or the Smurily Smurf Gargamel as he attempts to Smurf the Smurfs’ efforts.

And if you Smurf to expand your game (this is where the collectible part comes in), Wizkids has also released a bunch of individual boosters that contain a single painted Smurf figure.  There are eight total, so Smurf that allowance money to collect them all.

So who votes for all future posts to be written in that language?  No takers?  Whew, hallelujah!
