Pack of Heroes card gameInspired by Sentinels of the Multiverse and playing like comic book version of Magical Athlete, Pack of Heroes is a fast playing, two player superhero card game.  Divided into two phases, Pack of Heroes first has players compete in a drafting game.  Thirty heroes are represented by trading card-esque cards with stats and powers.  After drafting has finished, players battle with their hero decks in order to decide Ork Mek Warhammer 40Kthe greatest superhero of all!

Since the Orks are Warhammer‘s favorite child at the moment, two more brand new Ork miniatures are out this weekend.  First up is the heavily armed Ork Big Mek, Star Wars Joins Us or Die Force Packdisplayed to the right.  The second figure this weekend is the Ork Painboy.

Remaining in a Fantasy Flight galaxy far, far away, the X-Wing miniature battle game finally receives its fourth wave of ships.  This fourth wave provides two new ships for both the rebel and empire factions, including the E-Wing and Z-95 for the rebels and the Tie Phantom and Tie Defender for the empire.

Ticket to Ride 10th Anniversary EditionThough it feels like only yesterday, Ticket to Ride is turning ten years old this weekend!  To commemorate the game’s lengthy existence and dominance as one of the top family board games ever, Days of Wonder has released a special 10th Anniversary Edition of the base game.  A complete collector’s item, this edition of the game comes with the United States game board that is double the size of the original with completely new illustrations.  As well, the identical plastic trains of the original game have been replaced by unique, painted plastic train miniatures, each representing a different train car and era.

Got eight minutes to spare?

Why not play Eight-Minute Empire: Legends?  The second stand-alone release in this line, Legends is literally playable in eight minutes, ready-made for quick gaming in between gaming.  The game involves players picking cards off of six piles, with each card providing a special action to perform immediately after.

Three new ships pull into the Star Trek Attack Wing docking bay this weekend, including the USS Excelsior for the Federation, RIS Vo from the Romulan alliance, and Dominion’s Koranak vessel.

Who you gonna call?  Yourself!

Ghooost! is family friendly, easily travel-able card matching game where players try to get rid of their hand of cards by matching suits with cards previously laid down.  Players pull from their “mansion” for new cards, hoping for cards with special abilities that allow them to lay more cards or enact other actions.  The whole game also comes in a handy carrying box that folds out into the game board.

Gamer couples searching for a new two player experience need look no further than Pixel Tactics and Pixel Tactics 2.

Head-to-head battling is the name of the game, stemming from each player controlling an identical deck of cards, but assigning a specific leader card to the deck that entirely alters how each card plays.  This allows for twenty-five different variations on the standard deck.  And don’t worry about picking these initially releases up in order, they are both stand-alone and can be played in any order.

The fifth large expansion for the Warhammer:  Invasion LCG card game, Hidden Kingdoms, fleshes out the remaining factions that have, up until now, not seen play in the game.  These include Skaven, Lizardmen, Wood Elves, and Undead, each of which has been built-up to a full faction.

The Mayan apocalypse may never have come, but that hasn’t stopped Tzolk’in from producing an expansion to end all expansions.  Tribes and Prophecies not only adds enough pieces to include a fifth player, but also alters the gaming experience entirely by allowing each player to take command of tribe leaders that grant them abilities beyond the normal selection.

Space is a vast and endless place, which means Rio Grand Games has plenty of universe to produce a fifth Race for the Galaxy expansion from.  Alien Artifacts adds a fifth playable deck onto the base game, as well as five additional start worlds.  Along with these extra pieces, the expansion contains another gaming mode where players map an alien “orb” searching for artifacts that gain them extra powers.

For the penultimate game item, Pathfinder, like a Pokemon trainer on a winning spree, continues to evolve their dragons.  This time around, it’s the Red Dragon Evolution set of miniatures.

And, basically, that’s kinda it…

Anyway, the ‘verse is never done offering up rewards for determined, swindly captains, especially ones experienced in Breakin’ Atmo.

Star Trek Attack Wing

For all the Trekkies out there who’ve gotten tired of hearing their Star Wars fan buddies rant and rave about the greatness of the X-Wing miniature game, now is your time to gloat!  Going boldly where previous miniature games have not, Star Trek Attack Wing applies Heroclix mechanics to a ship-to-ship battle game.  Also, the Trek ships are accurately depicted in both size, speed, and maneuverability.

Keyflower:  Key Celeste

With Key Celeste added to the game, players bid for the Key Celeste tile and obtain the ghost in the same way that they bid for the turn order tiles. The owner of the ghost can use it to frighten away and replace another player’s winning bid. The player who played the ghost takes the replaced worker(s) and places them behind his screen. These workers are now available to play by that player in the usual way. Points are available at the end of the game for the owner of the Key Celeste tile and additionally for the ghost if they own both.

Star Wars:  The Battle of Hoth Force Pack

The goal of the game is for players to gain the most gold pieces that they will amass either by telling the truth, or alternatively, bluffing. Players each receive a Character card, that they will switch, or not, with their opponents throughout the game play. At each turn, players have the option to either announce who there are, and therefore are able to activate the power of that Character, as long as none of the other players challenge them; to secretly look at their card; or to swap their card with another player. – Asmodee.com

Cosmic Encounter: Cosmic Storm expansion

The galaxy is trembling in Cosmic Storm, the newest expansion for Cosmic Encounter. With twenty-five new aliens and thirty-five new cards, Cosmic Storm adds more variety than ever. Dungeon Roll dice

A tiny treasure chest full of dungeon crawl-y goodness, Dungeon Roll dice blends classic RPG adventuring with dice rolling and card games.  Similar to Zombie Dice and Martian Dice, Dungeon Roll has players rolling sets of creature and character dice in turns to improve their abilities and fight their way through a dungeon.  Each player also receives a specific character card (with 8 extra hero cards included in the Hero Booster Pack) that can be upgraded throughout the game.

Restock is the magic word for this week’s New Game Stuff.

Above all else is the return or revenge or attack of the X-Wing miniatures game.  After having been out of print for a limited time, all of the wave two ships are back in stock.  That’s the Tie Infiltrator, the Millennium Falcon, the A-Wing, and the Slave I.  And they’re just in time, too, because this Sunday brings the first Star Wars X-Wing League Play day up at the store.  So choose whether you support the Rebel Alliance or the Empire then come knock some ships out of the stars in some head-to-head battle.  Sign-up will begin at noon and play will commence shortly after.

After selling out swiftly last week, Dixit Quest has returned from whatever magical land this game hails from.  For those who’ve been awaiting the return of Dixit 2, this is your chance.  Dixit Quest is an eighty-four card expansion for the base Dixit game, adding a gallery’s worth of psychedelic, gorgeous artwork to this Apple-to-Apples-esque party game.  If you’re not familiar with Dixit, then allow me to inform you.  Play revolves around players taking turns offering descriptive words, sounds, or phrases, then everyone who didn’t lays down a full-art card which they feel best encompasses the description.  From there, everyone chooses the card they think the person who offered the descriptor laid down.  Points are awarded based on who is correct and incorrect.  An extremely well illustrated game, Dixit is fun for the whole family.

Magazines are supposed to have gone the way of the dodo, but here’s a brand new one in the tradition of Dungeon and Dragon Magazine called Gygax Magazine.  As they say in the forward, the name of the publication was chosen out of respect to the originator of the RPG and as a statement of the traditional approach the magazine is going to take to its content.  The first issue of this nostalgic treat features stories about “The Future of Tabletop Gaming,” “The Cosmology of Role-Playing Games,” and “DMing for Your Toddler.”  A system-neutral play setting is also included, being Gnatdamp a tiny hamlet in the middle of a swamp, full of rowdy cutthroats.  Come reminisce with issue #1 of Gygax Magazine.

Managing to actually beat the next Star Wars films into the world, the Fantasy Flight Star Wars RPG base set has, shockingly, arrived earlier than expected.  Copying the Pathfinder Beginner Box method of release, Star Wars Edge of the Empire is also released in a beginner box format, coming with all the essentials for play.  Included in the box is a quick-to-learn rule booklet that will teach anyone, even the most uninitiated roleplayer, how to play the game.  Dice, pre-generated character sheets (which are ready-to-play), an adventure book, tokens, and much more are also included.  Create your own galaxy far, far away by picking up this one, catch-all Beginner Box.

Maybe you haven’t heard, but there’s this movie called The Hobbit coming out this weekend.  I don’t know, people are excited.  In a brilliant stroke of cross-marketing, Fantasy Flight has released a new Hobbit trick-taking card game.  A head-to-head battle of good versus evil, The Hobbit card game has players taking on the roles of Bilbo, Gandalf, and Thorin to take on the forces of Smaug and Bolg.  Each card has its own special abilities as well as associations with good or evil, which will benefit or harm them depending on the items being attached to them.  Trust me, you’re going to need something to keep you and your five friends busy while your sitting in line waiting for tickets.

In an effort to make an RPG system for every corner of the Warhammer 40K universe, the Only War Core Rulebook drops today.  Focusing on the Imperial Guardsmen, Only War allows players to control any of the twelve specialties, whether that’s the powerful Heavy Gunner or the beneficial Medic.  The game also supports all forms of interaction with easy-to-understand rules capable of handling conversations to mass battles.  Also, by the weird possibility that you’re playing a 40K game without knowing anything about the universe, this rulebook comes with complete background details on the Imperial Guard and all their enemies.

Though he, technically, has nothing to do with Dominare, Bane’s general revolutionary plan does share some similarities with the gameplay.  It’s all about influencing the citizens of Tempest with secret backdoor dealings, underhanded treachery, and cunning.  Each player controls different agents of the underworld, sending them into eight different city districts to begin spreading rumors of a conspiracy that will upset the city’s balance.  In the end, its all about control and who possesses it.

Ticket to Ride continues to trek across the globe for its most recent map expansion packs, this time landing in Africa.  Ticket to Ride: The Heart of Africa (beside being a minor reference to Joseph Conrad’s famous short story) features an entirely original map of the country, complete with new terrain cards which specific different track colors for different geographical regions.  Players can multiply their points by using them in conjunction with particular routes.  As Ticket to Ride is one of the best family games on the stands since forever, so keep it fresh and interesting for yours by picking up this new expansion.

Continuing from Catan Histories previous releases, Merchants of Europe is the newest stand-alone Catan edition.  This augmentation of the basic Settlers of Catan rules has players controlling merchants and trading posts in various cities in Europe, attempting to expand their mercantile reach ever further.  Ultimately, your goal should be to recruit as many new merchants as you can in an effort to build trading posts further from your original locations and acquire different commodities (i.e. sugar, wood, sheep, etc.) for trade and sale.  Along with this, players must also build trading routes over which they will need to transport their goods, hoping they’ve built them in safe areas or else have their product pillaged from under them.
