There are few products that have Neil Gaiman‘s name plastered on them that are not worth a look.  A Study in Emerald is definitely in the “worth a look” category!  Based off the award winning short story by Gaiman, the A Study in Emerald board game throws players into the author’s fictional world, one that combines Sherlock Holmes and H.P. Lovecraft.  The Old Ones have taken over the Earth, running it for centuries, but a dedicated few are inclined to resist and restore power to the people.  Players will control those “Restorationists” as they attempt to overturn the Old Ones’ rule with covert assassinations and attacks.  Whether you use dynamite or espionage, the Arena of the Planeswalkers Battle for Zendikargoal is to restore power to humankind.

Built out of the ruins of the popular Heroscape miniature battle game, Arena of the Planeswalkers takes the Magic the Gathering mythos and uses it to provide miniature characters based off of Magic cards that can be pitted against each other.  Battle for Zendikar is the first expansion for the base game, including entirely new Planewalkers, heroes, and squads, as well as a special battlefield scenario to play through.  Bringing that scenario to life is an additional gameboard expansion that can connect to the previous board.  Ob Nixilis and Kiora are the two featured Planeswalkers in this set.Eldritch Horror Under the Pyramids

Munchkin Christmas LiteWith the holiday season just beginning in earnest this weekend, it’s time to start thinking about that one important question that everyone raises during the season:  can you play Munchkin?  Okay, maybe not the most important question, but still valid.  Well, Steve Jackson games has made it easier than ever to get into Munchkin with Munchkin Christmas Lite.  An inexpensive deck of Christmas themed cards, Christmas Lite has all of the Munchkin Kittensmaterials for three or four players to learn the basics of Munchkin.

Styled after 16-byte video games of yore and a pinch of Minecraft, Melee is an army battle game for two to four players.  In the world of Melee, the king has died without an heirs to the throne.  Each player will control one of four different armies (each sitting astride either a parrot, mouse, pig, or dinosaur), fighting from their own castle, to attain the throne.  You will use money and other Operation Faustresources to build your armies and pit them against each other to decide ultimate dominance.

Think Coup or Bang! during WWII and you’ve got Operation F.A.U.S.T., a new deception game from Grey Fox Games.  In this highly social game, players will find themselves in occupied France during WWII, tasked with a mission to recover Europe’s most valuable pieces of art before they are looted by Hitler.  To win the game you must gather intelligence, locate Europe’s most at risk treasures, and recover them before your opponents.  Use your network of spies, double agents, and more to achieve your goals, but take care not to reveal information to others.Bomb Squad

Remaining on the field of battle, but updating it to a modern era, Bomb Squad is a cooperative game with high stakes.  In Bomb Squad players control members of the Retro City Bomb Squad, and their trusty bomb disposal robots in order to defeat dastardly villains that threaten the world.  Help program a robot to navigate buildings, rescue hostages, and defuse bombs in real time.  You cannot see your hand of Command cards, so you’ll have to help your partners figure out which cards to play.  Using a special timer app, the game plays out in real time, with bombs going off every ten minutes unless you defuse them!

TerraCombining a party game experience with factual trivia, Terra pits players against each other in a competition where being close counts.  Faced with world trivia questions like “How long is the Golden Gate Bridge?” or “How many sculptures are on Easter Island?” players will attempt to make educated guesses, marking them with cubes on a slider.  If you don’t know the answer, use your opponents knowledge against them by guessing just a little bit less or more than what they do.  It can’t hurt, as being closer is the goal.

Aperture Science welcomes players to a board-based cake acquisition enrichment activity, Portal the board game.  Yes, Cryptozoic and Valve have adapted the popular Portal video game series into a board gaming experience.  Players control test subjects who are attempting Portal board gameto traverse the testing lab, represented by a modular board, using high tech portal guns.  Tiles will fall off the board over the course of the game, causing players to leap forward as fast as they can in hopes of not getting caught in a disappearing tile.  And at the end:  cake!  Of course, the cake is a lie, so Cryptozoic has given you an exclusive Steam redemption Warhammer Quest Adventure Card Gamecode for Portal 2 instead.

Pulling from Japanese culture, Kitsune:  Of Foxes and Fools is a new hand management card game that puts players into the role of an ancient fox spirit.  These Kitsune punish the foolish, sinful mistakes of humans, earning their tails when they do.  Players will uses cards to reprimand humans, attempting to earn nine tails as a means of attaining victory.

Carcassonne Gold RushCarcassonne Around the World is a recent themed set of Carcassonne expansions that take the base tile-laying and meeple placement from the original game and drop them into different times and locals.  Gold Rush is the second release in this set, sending players back to late 1800s America.  Instead of castles and roads, players will be hunting for gold in mines and placing tents.  Of course, you can always choose to steal your opponent’s gold if your digging isn’t turning a profit.

Long awaited, the third deluxe expansion for the Fantasy Flight Star Wars LCG game is Star Wars Between the Shadowsout!

In Between the Shadows players received cards that highlight the Jedi and Scum & Villainy factions.  Included in the expansion are twenty-six entirely new objective sets.  Among the characters that players will be allowed to use are fan favorites like Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

From Stefan Feld, the creator of Bruges and The Castles of Burgundy, comes Amerigo.

Using a similar randomizing tower to the one in Wallenstein, Amerigo has players dropping differently colored cubes into the tower.  Some cubes will remain inside, others will fall to the bottom, but each cube designates a specific action option for the players of the game.  Strategically using the actions available, players must mine for resources, fight off pirates, discover new lands, and more.

Space is endless, just as the battles that rage among its starry confines.

The popular Kickstarter deck-builder, Eminent Domain grows a little more with the Escalation expansion.  Altering the dynamics of the base game (which is necessary to play), Escalation adds enough role cards to include a fifth player, while also including a new technology as well as a way to play old ones differently.

In Russia Berserk plays you!

Berserk:  War of the Realms, a popular Russian deck-battling game has crossed the Atlantic.  This base set includes six thirty card decks, immediately ready for play, as well as over sixty extra cards for customization later.  Along with the base game, there is also Berserk:  Knights and Villains, both an expansion and a stand-alone game, that has players choosing a side (Knight or Villain) at the start of player, then requiring them to choose their forces for the oncoming battle.

Whether she can’na handle any more, cap’n, or not, Star Trek Attack Wing continues to add more ships to the fleet.  This weekend, both the Federation and Klingon fleets gain vehicles in the form of the USS Defiant and the IKS Koraga, respectively.

Wings of Glory gets Napoleonic with Sails of Glory.

Applying the same mechanics from the popular Wings of Glory fighter plane battle game, Sails of Glory pits ship against ship.  Each player selects special movement cards in secret, then plays them simultaneously with their opponent.  This mechanic causes each opponent to strategically assume where the other ship will be based on possible movement options.  Wind and other elements will also now affect your vehicles, lending the game more reality and difficulty.

The Bestiary grows ever larger!

Another addition to the Pathfinder Pawns line of miniatures and tokens, the Bestiary 3 Box is out this weekend.

The box comes equipped with over two hundred differently illustrated miniature pawns as well as a selection of differently sized bases to match.

The FATE Freeport Companion brings the FATE rule system to a well know (shadily populated) area of the fantasy universe.  This hefty tome contains a special adventure written for the system and set in Freeport, new rules for magic users, stats for creatures and baddies within the local, as well as rules  for an armory’s worth of weapons, tools, and firearms.

Skull has gone through many editions throughout its existence, but the Silver version dropping this weekend is the purest version hits shelves.  This edition features the same fabulous bluffing mechanics of the classic version (wherein players take turns laying down cards, bluffing how many of a particular suit they have, then having to play them when called on it) but with redesigned artwork and an accompanying playmat.

Place your bets, place your bets!  The mythical battle is about to begin! 

Cheaty Mages puts you smack dab in the middle of an arena battle of mythic proportion, pitting imaginary creatures against one another.  Players, controlling sneaky mages, place bets on who will win the fight.  But beware, as mages, you can influence the outcome in your favor.

Purple Brain games continues its Tales & Games line with Baba Yaga.  Including a complete story to read to the kiddies, Baba Yaga is a excellent family game of observation, wherein players play simultaneously in an effort to collect ingredients to an anti-witch spell.  Also, to better serve kids of all ages, the game scales up based on age.

The Titanium Wars have begun!

A diplomacy game of the farthest reaches, Titanium Wars, from the creators of King of Tokyo, involves players taking control of galactic generals and conquering planets for money.  Once these planets have been colonized, players then populate them with factories and bases in order to grow their fleet and earn more money.

A galaxy far, far away gets closer and closer with another supplemental book for the Star Wars Edge of the Empire RPG with Enter the Unknown.  A hardcover supplement, Enter the Unknown focuses on Explorer characters expanding their motivations, obligations, species, and specializations whiles supplying new equipment, ships, and signature abilities.

Zombicide becomes Zombiciting this weekend with a boat load of expansions and supplements!

Zombicide Prison Break is an entirely stand-alone expansion, which can be combined with the original game or other expansions if you please.  Zombicide Toxic City Mall, however, is exclusively an expansion for either Prison Break or the base game, containing four new survivors, their Zombivor versions, and six Zombivor versions for the original game.  Extra zombie packs of all shapes, sizes, and varieties also dropped today, including Toxic Crowd, Zombie Dogz, Angry Zombies, and Walk of the Dead 2.
