Bodies #1Bodies #1 (of 8)

-Like a British version of True Detective.

-Si Spencer, the British writer of various Judge Dredd, Hellblazer, and Doctor Who comics, weaves a decade spanning crime mystery.

-Bodies is set in four different time periods, ranging from the 1890s to 2050, each with their own detective attempting to solve a homicide.

-Each time period is also drawn by a different artist, giving a distinct tone to each story.

Hugh Howey’s Wool #1 (of 6)Hugh Howey's Woold #1

-A graphic novel adaptation of the New York Times bestselling novel!

-What began as a single short story has grown into a series of novellas and now a comic book adaptation.

-The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the remnants of society live in a 100-story deep silo.  Or is it that simple?  Wool is a story of nearly constant twists and turns, leaving the reader desperate for answers.

-Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti (Jonah Hex, All-Star Western, Harley Quinn) and Jimmy Broxton (Knight and Squire) are handling the adaptation, with Darwyn Cooke on covers.

Chew Warrior Chicken Poyo #1Chew Warrior Chicken Poyo #1

-Everyone’s favorite secret agent chicken is back!

-The Chew guys don’t skimp on one-shots, as both John Layman and Rob Guillory are not passing writing and art duties off to fill-in creators.

-The last Poyo one shot vanished off the shelves nearly as quick as it arrived, making it a sought after collectible

-Adding to the collector’s value of this issue, Poyo crosses paths with Robert Kirkman’s Walking Dead cast, so you know that’s going to have some after-market value.

Low #1Low #1

-Another new series from Rick Remender, who after Black Science, Captain America, Uncanny Avengers, and Marvel‘s upcoming Axis miniseries, is on a creative roll!

-Basically, a Bioshock comic book series.

-Low takes place on an Earth that has been so irradiated by the explosion of our sun that humanity has moved under the ocean for protection.

-Greg Tocchini’s gorgeous painterly artwork adds another beautiful comic series to the already populated list of capably illustrated Image Comics series.

The best team is the one that doesn’t know it’s a team.

That’s the premise of Nick Spencer’s (Morning Glories, Thunder Agents, Thief of Thieves) new run on Secret Avengers.  Joining the Marvel NOW! line, Secret Avengers #1 builds the extremely covert team of Hawkeye, Hulk, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Winter Soldier to send them on their mission.  And it does it with only one word.  Basically, every member of the team becomes activated by a single word, completes their mission, is told the word again, and walks off into the sunset blissfully ignorant of everything they just did.  It’s covert ops at it’s most covert.  And when it’s drawn by a master of the dark and gritty like Luke Ross, it’s practically so covert it’s not even there.  Or if you want a little more boisterous version, maybe the Skottie Young variant cover will suit you.

As Magneto said, villains it is then.

Uncanny X-Men #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo is all about the baddies.  Serving as the companion book to Bendis’ other X-Men title, All-New X-Men, Uncanny stars Cyclops, Magneto, Emma Frost, and a bunch of other good-for-nothings.  Unlike any other X-Men book before it, this time around it’s the Brotherhood of (Evil) Mutants in the limelight.  Now that Cyclops has assembled his team he’s on a mission to enact his vision of mutant dominance, one which he’s willing to carry out by whatever means necessary.

Since tonight’s list seems all about murdery murder, it seems only fair to let a female master assassin in on the mix.  Katana #1, spinning out of the soon-to-be-released Justice League of America, stars the widowed sword-wielding hired killer of the same name.  With her family’s souls residing in the very sword she uses to slay her enemies, the Soultaker, Katana has to be careful not to let its power and conscience forestall her mission.  Anyone reading Birds of Prey should be familiar with Katana‘s character and mission, as well as fans of the classic Outsiders series.

Finally, for those who have been hanging on the edge of their seat since the release of the first New 52 Batman hardcover, the wait is over!  Batman: Night of the Owls continues the onslaught of The Court as they descend on Gotham in an effort to purge it of the social elite.  But Nightwing, Batgirl, Batman, Robin, and the rest of the Bat-Family may have something to say about that.  This thick hardcover edition comes packed with the entire Court of the Owls crossover, which includes Batman #8-9, the Batman Annual, Detective Comics #9, Dark Knight #9, Batwing #9, Batman and Robin #9, Red Hood and the Outlaws #9, Birds of Prey #9, Batgirl #9, Nightwing #8-9, and All-Star Western #9.  That’s a lot of Batman punching Talon action for a minimal price.

Whether you love the idea or despise it with a passion, the first of the Before Watchmen prequel books launches this Wednesday.

I know there are haters out there, but in an attempt to counter the arguments against Before Watchmen, allow me to make a few points.

1. Alan Moore made his career off of working on other people’s characters: Swamp Thing, Superman, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen characters, and the Charlton characters (who the Watchmen were based off).

2. The line-up of creators assigned to these books is one of the most impressive creative bodies I’ve ever seen. Especially, with Minutemen, the first book, which is written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke. Cooke does not release that much material, but when he does we get exceptional works like DC New Frontier and the Parker series of graphic novels.

3. Comics are all about re-interpretation. If creators weren’t allowed to work on characters invented by different authors we would never have the great body of Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, Green Lantern, and so forth, stories we do today. Personally, I’m thrilled to see other, talented writers and artist offer their interpretations of Alan Moore’s creations.

So, I recommend sampling each of the miniseries. I know I will be.

There’s been a ton of alien invasion stories propagating various media over the last couple years, but not too many where they aliens actually win. And there are NONE where the only only surviving resistance against them are two super powered individuals, one a villain and one a hero. This is the premise of Boom Studios! new ongoing series, Extermination. Written by novelist and wackadoo comic writer Simon Spurrier (X-Club, Gutsville), Extermination is going to be a back-to-the-wall action-adventure book with some smartly written dialog and conflict. Plus, the first
issue is only a $1.

Speaking of cheap first issues, popular (and accurate) comic rumors and news website, Bleeding Cool, is launching Bleeding Cool Magazine this week for only $1.49. Filled to the brim with the same scoops, articles, analysis, and factual reporting you’ve come to respect. Unlike most comic news websites, Rich Johnson has inside industry connections, which makes causes most of his scoops to be accurate. If you’ve been missing Wizard Magazine, Bleeding Cool Magazine is a superior replacement.

For all of the Kevin Mellon followers out there (and I know the store has a bunch), his next project releases this Wednesday. As usual with Kevin, it is a unique experience unlike any other book on the shelves. Creator Owned Heroes is a new comic experiment, offering two individual stories bridged by interviews, pictures, sketches, and other extras, all for $3.99. Before Kevin’s story, there is Trigger Girl 6 by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Grey (All-Star Western, Jonah Hex) and Phil Noto about a genetically engineered, hottie assassin. Filling out the issue is American Muscle, a wasteland, post-apocalyptic actioneer reminiscent of Road Warrior and Mellon’s freshman book, Gearhead. Topping that flambe of awesome off is an interview with Neil Gaiman as well as cosplay photos of Trigger Girl 6. That’s like a pound of comic-y goodness, folks.

If it’s Comic List Highlights and it’s Pulp Fiction, then it’s time for your New 52 Update.  In the New 52 Update we, the comicly nerdy, employees of Pulp Fiction tell you, the hungry for information, customers which DC Relaunch books ship this week with a one word description of each.  Last week of this, by the by.  DC decided to end with some wordy titles.  Fury of Firestorm, the Nuclear Man?  Really?

*All-Star Western – Howdy  *Aquaman – Seahorse

*Batman The Dark Knight – Gritty  *Blackhawks – Leather  *Flash – Speeding

*Fury of Firestorm, the Nuclear Man – Hothead

*Green Lantern New Guardians – Rayner  *I, Vampire – Non-sparkle

*Justice League Dark – Constantine  *Savage Hawkman – Mace

*Superman – Bachelor  *Teen Titans – GO!  *Voodoo – Hoodoo

Sure, sure, DC had its whole relaunch thing going on this month, but the real news is that Dennis Hopeless and Kevin Mellon’s long awaited Lovestruck graphic novel is finally shipping!  Some of you out there probably know that Dennis used to work at Pulp Fiction, back in the day, and Kevin has been a frequent customer since the paint was still drying.  Since that point, the two of them have refined their craft to a science and are steadily rising up the ranks at Marvel and Image, respectively.  If you want to be in on the ground floor of a book that will become a collector’s item in the future, in the same way that Five Fists of Science did, pay attention to Lovestruck.  What other book will you ever read that has a bunch of battling, punk cupids.  Oh, and the Ramones are literal gods in the book.

If debauchery and rock n’ roll isn’t your thing (or you don’t think your kids would cope well with all that insanity), then DC is there for you.  Launching a string of kid-friendly books in the vein of Tiny Titans (same artist, too), DC is covering all their bases this month.  This line of books is called DC Super-Pets and stars all the animal counterparts of DC‘s most popular heroes.  For instance, Powerful Pooches with Ace the Bathound and Krypto the Superdog.  Or Fastest Pet on Earth with Wonder Woman’s pet kangaroo.  If you’re trying to teach your child how to read, get them into comics, or to get something fun to read to them at bedtime, the DC Super-Pets books are a perfect option.

Ending with an oldie, but a greatie tonight.  Even though this collection has already been released a couple years ago in a hardcover edition, it’s such a milestone of comic writing and DC history that a softcover release of it (especially when the hardcover isn’t being printed anymore) is worth noting.  This hallowed book is known as the JLA by much respect writer Grant Morrison.  During Morrison’s JLA run, every one of the main seven characters (Aquaman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Superman) gets a defining moment and a clean, concise portrayal.  So, basically, what I’m saying here is that this is perfect starter book to learn about all the DC Big Guns.  Quite the fitting companion piece to all the relaunch books currently shipping.

So, for those of you out there who’ve been living under a comic-deprived rock for the last month or so, DC Comics is relaunching 52 #1 issues in September!  That’s 52 opportunities to jump onto new and existing books of all genres and styles!

As we’re all comic fans here at Pulp, we know you’re mind is immediately beginning to think about which books to pick up and which to skip.  Well, as comic fans, we say picking and choosing is for sidekicks.  Heroes go for ALL 52!  Seriously, wearing a tiny green speedo is not a good look.

In an effort to assist all you good heroes in nabbing every relaunch book, Pulp is offering a 25% OFF deal to anyone who pre-orders all 52 #1′s before their ship date!  As the first book ships on August 31st, if you start payments now, that’s less than $15 a week!  Or if you’re blingin’ like Bruce Wayne, you can pay off the lump sum in one go.  As long as you pay off all the books before August 31st, justice prevails!

Sound tempting?  Well, to push you over the edge, here’s the complete solicits for each and everyone of the 52 #1′s!  Salivating is allowed.
