Another entry in the 8-bit influenced card game series, Pixel Tactics 3, like its predecessors, is entirely stand-alone!  So, if you wish, you can add it to either of the previous releases, but that is not necessary to be able to play it.  As for how the game works, players will select hero cards from a limited amount of options, construct a deck out of them, then pit them against Madame Chingtheir opponent.  Where the strategy lies is in using the right hero, in the right way, for the right situation.

The great pirate captain Madame Ching has enlisted you, a trusted captain among her pirate army, to sail out and capture the most booty, will you succeed?  Each player controls a different captain, each attempting to waylay unsuspecting ships, outrun fellow players, and acquire new skills.  Working Space Wolves Stormfang Gunship miniature 40Kyour way across the board, part of the strategy comes in choosing to push on to Hong Kong or return to Madame Ching first.

It’s all for one and one for all in the newest expansion for The Duke!

The Musketeers expansion includes tiles representative of D’Artagnon, Aramis, Porthos, and four other Musketeer characters.  As well, the expansion alters players’ starting hand as well as particular tile laying mechanics.  Alongside this expansion is the Arthurian Legends set.  As with the former set, Arthurian Legends includes tiles representative of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, and others, as well as rules which allows asymmetrical opposing forces.

The Pathfinder library grows by three books this weekend.

First up is The Midnight Isles from the Wrath of the Righteous adventure set.  This contains a adventure for twelfth level characters as well as four new monsters.  Second, a player companion entitled The Magical Marketplace, which includes information on shop owners, magical tattoos, as well as descriptions of alternate forms of payment.  Finally, we have the Inner Sea NPC Codex containing over sixty characters, ready-made for game master needs.

A complete revamp of the system, the Malifaux 2nd Edition Rule Manual drops today!

The steampunky miniature battle game receives an update of all its factions, stories, and characters, a perfect entry point for any new player.

Take one down and pass it around, there’s still three new Red Dragon Inns on the wall!

Red Dragon Inn 4, the fourth large expansion for the game, takes the shenanigans of the previous editions out to sea, providing a new set of adventurers in the form of Captain Whitehawk, First Mate Remy, Bryn the Boatswain, and Tara the Navigator.  As well, the expansion allows for encounters to occur during the celebration!

Along with this large expansion come two Allies expansions, including Cormac the Mighty and Witchdoctor Natyli.  Cormac is a human barbarian who gains alcohol content for being capable of striking harder.  Natyli, as a master of wizardry, can weaken other players enabling her to successfully attack from a minimal strength.

Tonight’s topics of discussion where easy to choose, because I’m, literally, going to mention every book that comes out next week.  Thank the holidays, folks.

First up, the most prominent of all the releases is the 700th issue of Amazing Spider-Man.  It is also the last.

As some of you might know (by either reading the book or a comics news site in the last three months) Peter Parker has been having a rather bad time lately.  Doc Ock has swapped brains with Peter, only moments before the his own death, leaving Peter with minimal options of escape.  Having managed to survive, Peter as Ock, calls on the Sinister Six to aid him in returning his brain to his body.  #700 picks up from there, answering the dire question of whether Peter can return his consciousness to his body before the one he’s in gives out.  Trust us, True Believers, if you thought the twist ending of AMS #698 was a doozy, your brain with self-destruct over this one.  Truly an event that will change the course of the Spider-Man universe for the foreseeable future.  And, if you’re the collector type, the issue ships with multiple variant covers by Humberto Ramos, Marcos Martin, and more, each celebrating the many decades of web-slinging that has lead to issue #700.

Avenging Spider-Man 15.1 is the only other book that comes out from Marvel this holiday week, adding an important epilogue to the landmark issue.

On the DC front, the first massive crossover between the Justice League and Aquaman series begins, with Justice League #15 and Aquaman #15.  Both issues also come with their own variant covers (like the one pictured on the right).  And what has drawn these two flagship DC titles together, besides the mutual presence of the King of the Seas?  As Aquaman has been away from Atlantis since he was a young boy, his half-brother, the Ocean Master, has ruled in his stead.  But now Arthur wants his throne back.  This Grecian-esque power struggle will rage across land and sea, drawing in the other heroes and villains of the universe, including the newly created creatures known only as The Trench.  As Geoff Johns writes both series, expect a tightly controlled, character-driven event kept lively by sprawling battles.

DC also finishes up another of the terrific Before Watchmen series this week, with Nite Owl #4.

With the big two out of the way, let’s focus on the artistic world of creator-owned independent comics.

And by that I mean a balls-to-the-wall smash’em up extravaganza known as Deathmatch!  Written by Paul Jenkins (Sentry, Hellblazer, Thunderbolts), Deathmatch may remind you of the Hunger Games, Battle Royale, Running Man, Civil War, and, oh, possibly that recent Dennis Hopeless title Avengers Arena.  Basically, a bunch of superheroes are trapped by a villain of unknown origin and told to murder one another to get free.  Not a new concept, but one that will be taken to its most violent conclusion by this series; if Avengers Arena is the character-driven version of this premise, Deathmatch is the gorey, all-fights-all-the-time version.  And issue #1 is only a $1.00!!!!

Brian Wood, author of such politically-motivated, socially conscious series as DMZ, Local, and The Massive (Plus the upcoming Star Wars series from Dark Horse), tackles the topic of celebrity worship with his new Image miniseries, Mara. Starring a young woman, who’s already world-famous from her exceptional physical prowess as an athlete, spontaneously manifests superhuman abilities on live television.  As the only superpowered individual in the world, Mara immediately becomes the center of global attention.  Things don’t play out so well from there.

And that’s the entirety of next week’s comics, folks!  Happy holidays!

Close, close in a gaming store not so far away…

Yes, hum the theme song in your head if you must. Fantasy Flight has released an exceptional limited run of specialty Star Wars backed card sleeves. So, play Magic with the man who shot first or catch’em all with Lord Vader or throw them on any other card game that needs some sci-fi spice. But whatever you do, pick them up before an X-Wing comes along and vaporizes them because there will not be any prequels here.

Of course, if space battles and laser swords aren’t your thing, maybe the other limited edition Lord of the Rings sleeves will be. Slip them over your favorite standard sized cards to give them a Samwise Gamgee to their Frodo Baggins. Or grasp the One Ring to rule all other swag-less individuals. Whatever you choose, wield them responsibly.

Bringing Cthulhu to the deck-building party, Penny Arcade: Rumble in R’Lyeh is both a standalone game and an expansion for last year’s Penny Arcade: The Game, Gamers vs. Evil! So, players can enjoy Eldar God gaming goodness in the base 2-4 player version of the game or combine it with the previous game for excessive nerd overload. Rumble in R’Lyeh specifically adds Gold cards to the gameplay, which must be acquired through the use of Token and Power cards. Totally worth it when they have names like Gunhorse (a horse made of guns, duh!), Sad Zombie, and Gabe’s Gross Mouth.

Bridging books and board games, the Where the Wild Things Are board game from the Tales to Play series, lets families take control of Max’s journey to the land of the Wild Things. Each player controls a different Max miniature game piece on his trek through the becoming king of the Wild Things. Players draw cards and roll dice to decide their success or failure across the illustrated game board. Great gameplay and Wild Thing miniatures for the whole family.

Gamers have been waiting for this next exapnsion since somewhere around the dawn of man. Yes,  has finally arrived. Adding not only a fifth player ability to the game, but a new item dubbed decoration. Players may now trade their resources for this item in an effort to gain further points. Club someone if you have too, fight a t-rex, do whatever you have to for a copy of this valued expansion.
